Steve McQueen was right

"Every time I start thinking the world is all bad, then I see people out there having a good time on motorcycles. It makes me take another look."

A buddy and I went for our traditional spring ride yesterday and although it's basically the same loop, for some reason yesterday was really fun/cool. Aside from perfect spring weather, very little traffic and the joy of getting the first bugs splats on cleaned riding gear, the air smelled sweeter for some reason. I'm usually not big on "waving" to other riders, but yesterday we all waved. Maybe it wasn't waving, it might have been a salute. A salute to say, "good for you to forget all the shit and get out and do what you love". Haven't turned on the tv today, don't care. I'm going to clean my bike and enjoy every minute. Yep, we've all seen the movie, but yesterday McQueen spoke to me.

I always got a kick out of him racing motorcycles under a fake name to avoid being hassled.

Harvey Mushman was the name he used, IIRC.

So classic, Harvey Mushman... I don't think he was near the rider Malcolm was but probably if not for him, On Any Sunday may not have been produced. I guess that deserves a few bonus points...

Nobody was Malcolm. That dude could arguably have been the best motorcyclist to ever swing a leg over a machine. Incredible achievements and the looks on his face after even the most grueling of events is inspiring. Dirt, road, sand, rocks, epic desert races, he didn't care. As long as he was on a motorbike, nothing else mattered. If I had half the love he did, I might be a decent rider. And I'm ashamed that I'm not, on either account. I can't imagine having the passion to do something like that, the courage to follow your dreams, all that jazz. Awe inspiring. McQueen sure recognized the passion and talent. And he migrated to it. Malcolm might've been a little weird, and most people couldn't relate to him (or to McQueen, for that matter), but McQueen sure did. I have On Any Sunday on dvd, maybe it's time to re-watch it in honor of this COVID thing... and Faster, and Kentucky Kid, and Motorcycle Diaries.. any other suggestions?

I was quite lucky to spend one on one time with Malcolm Smith for a few hours just hanging and BSing. It was very fun! He is a super nice guy, interesting and down to earth from the couple hours I got to spend with him.
