Splitting picking up some steam...?

Just some more info coming out. The public needs more of this in our local papers for more awareness.

Oh yeah, we're hitting it hard over the next couple weeks in Salem. Get on the phone to your Representative and Senator and tell them to support HB2314!

In places that understand filtering, seeing a bike do it doesn't trigger the drivers' "hey that guy's cheating, he's getting away with something that I can't" rage impulse. Instead they've mostly got it through their thick skulls that it's a good thing, for them: every bike that's filtering is one vehicle that's not in a lane contributing to tailbacks and stoppages.

We need to leverage this as a way to get it over the safety/political hurdle.

The Seattle area caught up with California for traffic congestion several decades ago, and within the last 15 years or so Portland has too. There needs to be a public conversation about what filtering really means, to at least defuse the rage/spite response, so drivers understand that it's actually a good thing, desirable for them, rather than a rage trigger.

My point is this: the "it's actually pretty safe" conversation is a tough sell by itself, but the trick is to make drivers receptive to it by invoking their own self interest. If they want it to happen they'll be more ready to believe that it's safe, and to help convince others, including politicians.

How to write a memo:

To: B. Boquist, State Senator; R. Noble, State Representative; S. Bonamici, U.S. Representative

From: J. Martin

Subject: House Bill 2314

Date: May 4, 2019

HB 2314 is of great importance to Oregon's forward movement in regards to transportation as it will increase the flow of traffic in a safe and efficient manner, namely during times of high congestion.

Furthermore a motorcyclist doesn't have the stamina that a four wheeled vehicle operator does as they are more physically active and perhaps less comfortable. Therefore when a 60 minute commute turns into a 90 minute or more commute a motorcyclist may become fatigued and or dehydrated and thus lose some focus possibly resulting in a decrease of a fast-reaction time. Thus it only makes sense that a motorcyclist should be allowed to "keep it moving".

With the aforementioned arguments in mind and in place, Oregon may see an increase in motorcyclists which will force all drivers to become more aware of motorcyclists in general and understand them better, thus preventing deaths and accidents.

Please help to get HB 2314 passed as we strive to reach full lane-splitting status, as does California, with great result.

The Oregon bill just needs to get out of committee and it's likely to pass. Caddy McKeown is the one preventing a committee vote. Her email is in a previous post, also, writing your own Senator and Rep and asking them to urge her to allow a work session would be good too. Every little bit helps!

I was front of the line in my truck a few weeks ago on Hwy 9 in cathcart and a motorcycle filtered on my right and I just looked over and gave him the nod. Didn't bother me one bit. Plus he was lucky to have me behind him because I wont ram my truck up his ass and tail gate. Some people suck.

Get on her!

Here's Rep McKoewn's contact info. I have emailed a few times with nary a return message. Calling her office (multiple times) and sending her some snail mail may get her to act.
