Should I trade my r3 for a wr450f?

I have a 2015 r3 that I bought brand new. I want to get into supermoto riding and I found a what seems well condition 2005 wr450f. So my questions are; how long should this bike last me? How much more maintenance will the bike need? Anything wrong with 05 specific wrs? How fast will this go on the street compared to an r3 or r6 and how do these corner compared to a sport bike? Any advise would help greatly. Ive been riding for about a year and the r3 is my first bike, but Im ready to upgrade

a wr450 will have a similar top speed to an r3 but it will accelerate quicker and feel WAY faster. The r3 can also cruise at 80mph all day, while the wr450 is more comfortable at 55. A well setup sumo can corner faster than any sportbike, and it is a lot easier to corner fast.

The thing is a WR450 is a race bike, built for woods racing but still. It needs A LOT of maintenance. An r6 is "race ready" but it's really still a streetbike made to last for 50,000 miles+

With a wr450f on the street you'll be changing the oil every 10-15hrs and checking the valves every other oil change. You shouldn't cruise on the highway for long distances. You need to clean and oil the air filter often and check your oil pretty much before every ride (checking oil on the wr takes like 5 min). It will feel like a beast compared to the r3 but you're not going to want to use a bike like that as a commuter.

maintenance and practicality aside, a 450cc sumo is way more fun than a 600

So you're saying that even if I don't mind the extra maintenance, it still won't last as long riding it on the streets? Both bikes have about 7000 miles. And what about reliability? I hear that these are bullet proof, and I want something that I can get on and go all the time

Many bikes have "Bullet Proof" engines. However, no "Bullet Proof" engine will last long, if you don't follow the recommended maintenance intervals. In particular, you really want to follow the oil change and valve check/adjustment intervals.

Though maintenance is an important issue, a more important consideration is whether you will be able to register the vehicle to operate on the street. My understanding is that Yamaha only sold the WR450 in the U.S. as an Off-Road Motorcycle. If so, the state of Oregon won't register it for the street.

Even if the vehicle was plated in another state, it doesn't necessarily mean that Oregon will plate the vehicle. The rules vary between states on plating off road motorcycles. My best advice is to contact the Oregon DMV and ask them.

Sounds like a DRZ400SM might be a better choice. At least you could daily it and not have to worry about the high level of maintenance. As well as being street legal from the factory.
