Rode an Alta!

A little while ago I got to test ride an electric Alta Supermoto at the new KTM Seattle (also BMW and Ducati on Lake City Way). They had both the SM and dual sport versions, so I jumped on the SM and my buddy got the DS. You turn on the key and then hit an on button, which sets the gauge panel flashing green. This lets you know the bike is on and will go if you move the throttle. It is a little strange pulling away completely silently, except for a slight sound from the chain.

It has 4 power settings and we started in 1. My buddy was told to keep the DS at 2, since it would spin the knobby tire! I started experimenting and found enough power to lift the front tire in setting 1. We pulled up to a stop a couple blocks away and my buddy said "are you in setting 4 yet?"?! I said no and he said it is awesome! I quickly clicked up to 2, then got to 4. The power was impressive and very controllable, but the power band seemed reverse from an IC bike, very strong off the bottom and gradually weaker as speed increased. My buddy did spin up the knobby and scared himself a bit, the torque is amazing!

It was silly fun wheelying through the neighborhood with people not even noticing!? It was like being invisible, I rode within several feet of a woman getting out of her car and she didn't even notice me go by. The only sounds you could hear was our laughter, as we were having too much fun. Unfortunately, the bikes cost around $12k and have a range of 50 miles if ridden calmly, 30 if pushed hard. I am definitely looking forward to the future of electric bikes when the price goes down and range up!

next time you are there ask them about this:

https://www.theverge.com/2016/11/16/...estrian-safety

"Electric and hybrid-fuel cars will be required to produce noise when traveling at low speeds under a new rule issued by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is to prevent these vehicles from injuring pedestrians, especially people who are blind or are visually impaired.
The new rule requires all newly manufactured electric vehicles 10,000 pounds or less to make an audible noise when traveling forward or in reverse at speeds 19 mph or less. NHTSA says the sound alert is not required at higher speeds because other factors, such as tire and wind noise, “provide adequate audible warning to pedestrians."

Braaaaaaaaaaaap!!!!

14k total price?! Are there government discounts? I would love a electric bike for putzing around local roads. The mileage/speed isn't there though, maybe a few more years n we'll be there!

Also one could possibly buy 3 SXV 550's for that price. The extras being useful replacements when they begin to shit the bed and die...
