I rode my "sport bike" with clipons and carbon fairings for about 10 years...

i now have 10 bikes in the garage, none have clipons or fairings.

Go figure..

I figured this would be an interesting discussion. I have never owned a sportbike so I should have no opinion but of the few that I have ridden, most were grin inducing.

One interesting observation that came out of this that I can confirm is that in Europe sportbikes are a different animal than here. Is that good? Bad? I think it's both.

I don't think that they're a different animal as much as the attitude is very different. Again, I think it has more to do with how motorcycling became popular there, compared to here. Also, a lot has to do with the roadways over there, they don't have the amount of "superslabs" we do here, and have a lot more narrow, twisty, country roads. Sport bikes in Europe are like cruisers in the US. Cruisers outsell every other type of street bike here (with Harley still owning over 50% of the entire street bike market). In Europe, with road racing almost as popular as soccer, sport bikes hold a much different market share.

Just spent 5 hrs on a Ducati 1198 with about 175-180HP at the tire.
things I noticed:

- It was fun
- I was chasing a panigale 1299 with more +/-200HP I didn't feel at a massive disadvantage
- 150mph comes up pretty quick
- my wrists hurt
- my back hurts

FYI The rest of the bikes made it to the destination just fine (one super moto and a super duke) I was happy to bet back on the superduke (maybe 135HP )at the end of the day.

I have 51,000 on my 04 GSX-R 750. And I love it. I'm getting hard just writing about it. I have to go.

IMO, the fall in sales of sport bikes:

1: Lack of promotion of local races and track-days. For those on the forums, social media . . .when's the last time you saw a pop-up ad from a track-day provider? For a local race? I go to ONE site to look at moto-boots, and suddenly every page I visit ((Facebook, BBC (the news channel, you pervs!), ADVRider, etc)) has advertisements for other moto-gear.

2. Lack of TV access to national and int'l series. SpeedTV is gone, Two-wheeled Tuesdays are gone. You have to subscribe or pay extra to see anything but motocross on regular TV anymore. Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday . . . this doesn't work unless the customers can see the races.

3. Growing realization of the reality of riding a modern hyper-sport on the street: You can't get out of 2nd gear before you're into warp-90 and Neg-III territory. While I applaud the capabilities and the trickle-down of GP or WSBK tech, most of this tech is complete overkill (except for ABS) on the street. If you think you need 180 HP, 8 settings for wheelie and traction control for the street, 5 throttle maps, lean-angle sensors, etc . . . all I can say is park it or sell it before you kill yourself or others. If you think the street is the place to play with such settings . . .
