RIP Ivan Mauger

Not well known here in the US but anyone who followed speedway racing in the 60s, 70s and 80s (I used to because at that time I was flat tracking a T100) would recognize the name.

He was one of the greats.

Quote:
n 1970, two men in the USA named George Wenn and Ray Bokelman said that if Ivan Mauger won his third World Final in a row at Wrocław (Poland), they would have the winning bike gold plated. Mauger duly won the World Final that year, and true to their promise, the bike was taken to America and Gold plated, and so was born the "Triple Crown Special". The machine is on display at Canterbury Museum in Christchurch, New Zealand.

All but the fly-wheels, connecting rod, piston, valves, rocker arms and bearings are gold-plated.

Speedway racing has always been big in Europe and the UK.

"Maniacs on Wheels (orig. Once a Jolly Swagman)", 1949.

Vstrom 1000, DRZ 400 XR600 and way to many vintage mxers to list
Growing up in southern California my dad used to race a little speedway in Coasta Mesa, 1969-1972. I still have his Jawa though it is not running or in very good shape.

The Euro's were and are amazing. Our (U.S. and Socal rider) Greg Hancook has won the world champion 4 times.

That's pretty cool you still have your Dad's Jawa, not a lot of people in this day and age have seen or heard of them.
