New Oregon Tax

Oregon passed a new 2018 vehicle sales tax, .5 to 1%. So a $10k might be taxed $100 or a $30k car might be taxed $300.

Wait, only 2018-year vehicles will be taxed, or all vehicles in 2018 will be taxed?

In WA I paid about $450 tax on a $5000 car, is this a different tax than that?

I interpreted it as starting in 2018 all NEW cars sold subject to tax, not model year specific.

Your WA tax is structured completely differently, I'm assuming your $5k car was used.

I think sales tax on used stuff is insane

Actually, tax appears to be .5%. And looks likes it applies to a lot of things except motorcycles

It is a little ridiculous that a $5000 car sold twice in a month has the potential to earn $1000 for the state even though they do absolutely nothing except update a couple files in their system and maybe hand out a new license plate.

It feels equivalent as if I had to pay tax on a ladder that I bought used off of some random guy on Craigslist.

Technically you have to pay use tax on that ladder but no one does.

Same goes if you buy stuff out of state, WA wants you to pay use tax on said item.

Load of horse pucky if you ask me. Tax was already paid on the item the first time it was sold.

Well, with this 0.05% new tax on new vehicles the state of Oregon just put in motion the first to a full on sales tax just like Washington has. Of course the Income tax in Oregon will not be going away.
