New helmet design and technology

This is certainly strange looking material! KLIM is known for making good quality gear, so this isn't surprising that it's coming from their workshop.

Sounds like a similar concept to the Cascade M1 hockey helmet I bought a few years ago (I think Rbk bought them out, they're still around). In that case, they were using plastic tubes and the idea was to improve reliable repeat impact protection and tune it better to prevent concussions (a single use helmet ain't practical in ice hockey). No reason you couldn't do the same with a motorcycle helmet, and if you're willing to design for single impact, you could see some substantial decreases in g-force to the brain. Not to mention, blessed airflow. Be nice if they incorporated it into a street helmet.

That is very innovative. When I first saw the design I was hoping that it could be reused but it's clear that it can't. I was hoping that it could be so that it could be used in football helmets. I don't believe that football helmets will ever be "safe" unless a new material is developed. Football helmets allow more than twice as much brain acceleration than motorcycle helmets and have to be re-used over and over. As we all know, motorcycle helmets are one use only.

There are some pretty amazing innovations recently in football helmets though!
My buddy is the one who paints VICIS helmets for the NFL. Actually, come to think of it, he painted my bike as well!

That is very cool. I'd like to know the brain acceleration at typical pro football collisions. Motorcycle helmets are tested at around 15mph because the tests are designed to simulate a person falling off of a bike. Many pro players can run faster than 20mph and hit each other head on. Repeatedly.

My current snowboard helmet is built on that technology. So far I've been happy but fortunately haven't hit my head with it. It's a Smith Code helmet.

that whole football helmet thing is ridiculous. there just aint no material that can solve the relationship of time and distance. our grandchildren will wonder what the heck we were thinking with the whole football thing. "watch these dudes screw themselves up bad. it's fun."
