Maybe it is the holiday of gratitude, but I really can’t imagine being more thrilled with a bike than with my low-mileage used 2016 R1. It eclipses my ‘99 R1 (and 2006 FZ1) and that was an amazing ride when I got it and is still fun as shit. This one exceeds what I could have expected of a road bike. I will spend years trying to use what it is capable of. Money was not that big a factor in obtaining, and yet it supersedes my expectations entirely. |

Here's a better pic of the RD125 from when I first bought it after initial restoration. And here are a pics of that pristine RD350 tank. I'll probably put it up on EvilBay next year so I can finance rebuild of one of the bikes that needs it. |

A 2020 hello to you Kev and Judy. I mentioned my wish list for the RD-125 with yours in mind. I know that Judy had it fixed up just right. You two were always great to see at the SFRC two stroke rides. Kevin would show up there (and at least once at One Moto) on his RZ. I thought that little RD would make the perfect garage buddy for the Big Twin. Nostalgia.

There's a story behind the little RD. I wish I had "before" pics of it. A guy I knew loosely affiliated with OVM, who had helped me with my '85 RZ called me one day to say, I'm buying an RD125 to restore. Want to ride up to Auburn with me to check it out? He knew I was an ardent RD fan with some spares too. This was before Kevin moved here. We get up to the place and I stared at this little pile of very decrepit, rusted junk posing as a complete RD125. It looked like it'd been out in the rain for the last 25 years! I turned to him and said, OMG, you aren't REALLY going to try to resurrect this heap???!! He just grinned and said, well, it's a bit of challenge. Fast forward a few months. I'd given him some old side covers and small things. He calls me up kind of frantic and upset. It had taken him a few months to find an NOS ConRod for it. He'd brought the Crank to Charlie Brown's to rebuild it. I believe that was about the time Charlie had moved into his new shop off of OR224. He had misplaced the rod. Now, previously, for several years, I would use all my OT pay to search out & find NOS RD stuff. So I told him, "Jim, don't you remember me telling you I have an NOS Crankshaft for that? Virtually impossible to find, I'd snatched it up in another deal 5 years before, for only $150. He couldn't believe it, and practically begged me to sell it to him. Remembering his help on my RZ's linkage problem, I told him, NO!!! But then I laughed and said, if you ever sell it, I want first dibs, and if you promise that, I'll GIVE it to you. A few months after he finished it, he called me and said his wife had changed her mind about learning to ride, and he wanted to sell it. This was in '04 or '05. I told him I was kind of broke at the time. He just said, bring me $200 (all I could spare then), I'll sign over the title, and you can pay me the rest when you can ($700). That's how I got it. Later that year I rode it to an OVM meeting and was offered $1500 on the spot. Wasn't interested in selling. It might just be the only U.S. spec RD125 to have a front disc brake, and Z1000 handlebars, so technically, it's a RestoMod. |

Oh BTW, speaking of cool little vintage 2-smoke twins, last year I finally found a bike I'd searched 40 years for. Say hello to my little friend, a '69 HS1, 90cc twin. Sorry for the not so great, small pics.

As long as we're talking about money-no-object bikes, I would like to have my R5 back again. Two strokes; gotta love 'em. And since I might win the lottery, I want this: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/197...850-le-mans-2/ |
