Living with a 690 Duke or FZ-07, or...

Am probably going to end up replacing the bike that I commute on "soon," as it's got 52,000 miles, an electrical gremlin or two, and is using oil....and I've had it since 2009.

I have a built ZX-6R for the track and festive street riding, so this machine will be mostly to/from work, occasional half-day blasts in the twisties, and as a runabout.

Thinking of going light and agile - don't need a huge amount of power or accoutrements for the above - 690 Duke, FZ-07, possibly Ninja 300. Have any of you lived with any of those motorbikes? Things to watch for when buying used?

Of course, at the risk of this getting out of control, other bike suggestions are welcome.

I love my 690 Duke! And fall in love every time I go for a ride!.... goes every where tops out at 100 but rarely do I need to do that.

Pricey but worth it.

Be aware the 690 Duke changed engines in '16, which is more powerful and smoother because of an additional balance shaft in the head. The FZ would be much smoother than the early 690s, but maybe not much compared to the new one. And if you are thinking new, consider the new 2017 Husky 701 Enduro and Supermoto have the same engine as the new 690 Duke.

I had Ninja 250 for a while, awesome scoot. I assume 300 will be even better.

I've only had my FZ-07 for less than a month, but love commuting and going on short fun rides with it. Looked at the KTM 390 & 690 Dukes and Husky 701 / KTM 690 Sumos as well, but for the price and the type of riding I was going to be doing made it hard to pass up on the FZ.

Luckily I also have a liter bike (S1000RR) and dual sport (Husky 630) to ride so the FZ fits in just fine. If it would be my only bike, I might have moved up to the 2017 Husky 701 with the new more powerful and smoother engine.

Part of it is the style of bike you like, obviously, as a Ninja 300 and FZ have a different seating position. If you are getting 'older' and have a long commute the upright style may work better.
I have an R3 that is a hoot to ride but doesn't afford me much room to move around. I had two Ninja 250's before that and when I test rode the R3 and the 390 Duke for a friend both Ninja's went down the road and I bought the R3 for my wife! The friend ended up with an FZ07. I am considering trading the R3 in on a more upright style bike for commuting as the wife has stopped riding. The Honda CTX700 is of interest as it has the automatic transmission for getting stuck in traffic and gets 70 miles to the gallon. Not a powerhouse but 'could' be a nice commuter.

I used to have a Husqvarna 610 SM. Although it was a great bike, it was terrible for freeway commuting. Rock hard seat, single cylinder. At least it had the 6 speed so it wasn't too bad on RPMs at cruising speed. I ended up just using my sportbike at the time.

If you don't find sportbike riding position comfortable, I would go with a std like FZ7 or GSX-S...newer ones can be had cheap.

I wouldn't bother with Ninja 250/300, not enough overtaking power. Nice thing about a litre bike is you don't have to downshift.

Thank you for all the replies!

Yes, I did see the cylinder heads of the late model 690s had been redesigned with smoothness in mind - and it sounds like an improvement.

I see a lot of support for the FZ-07s here, too.

I've ridden a couple of Ninja 250s over the years, and have enjoyed them, but I do think I want more power. Probably more than the Ninja 300 or R-3s, but maybe I should try one of those, too. They'd sure be economical.

A buddy has a Husqvarna 701 - although I've not ridden it, he had no trouble keeping a sporting pace on the backroads. The seat looked a trifle uncomfortable, though!

Maybe used FZ09 if you can find one cheap enough.
