Learn Something New... Heron Heads

Reading a Cycle World article and came across these things that look like somebody made a huge manufacturing mistake. That weird looking flat face was paired with deeply dished pistons. The original idea being that it would work great with low levels of boost in aircraft engines, or shitty fuel in car engines.

Apparently it's mainly a British thing, but it's also used in nearly every Moto Guzzi. A quick internet search shows similarities to Diesel engines, though the Diesels I've worked on had a lighter dish on both the heads and pistons. Can't imagine you'd run very high compression on the one shown, because there are very few head bolts, and zero positive retention for the head gasket.
