Lane splitting now legal in WA...kinda..

Someone mentioned to me that a lane splitting bill in WA just passed, so I looked it up and found this:

http://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/bienni...20APS%2015.pdf

Ok. So it is legal, but only on a highway with 2 or more lanes in both directions, using the far left lane to the left of the vehicle being passed..... ESSENTIALLY INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. So, that's just passing right? Only now I can get extra close and personal by being in their lane.

25mph or less seems fine to me otherwise. I don't need to split while doing 90 (although could be helpful sometimes.....), only in slow traffic to filter or keep my bike cool. Sitting in traffic while raining sucks too.

I say screw it. Lane splitting is now legal. To hell with the lane restriction. It's not splitting lanes if they aren't the same direction.

I thought this died cause they didn't hold a session in the transportation committee to pass it as law.

Notice at the top, where it says "Senate Bill"? That is kind of important. The Senate is only one of three places that s bill has to get past to become a law. The other two are the House of Representatives and the Governor.

In this particular case the Senate passed this abortion of a lane splitting bill but the House transportation committee chairperson never allowed it to even have a hearing, so it died in the House.

Sorry to say, lane splitting, in any form, is NOT legal in Washington.

Sad. i think. im not sure how i feel. while the option sounded nice, what it ended up being wasnt really lane splitting in the technical sense. time to make some calls!

LANE SPLITTING IS STILL ILLEGAL IN WA, PERIOD

However, whatever you decide to do on the road is between you, and law enforcement.

I was riding behind some guys with Cali plates. We hit heavy trffic on 5 and they started splitting the left and middle lane like they thought their still in california. So said screw it. And joined them. All the way from Lynnwood to 520. I wish it were legal. That was my first time. Probably my last until it's legal or I'm following some more Cali boys

Your comparison is silly. Lane-splitting is a victimless crime.

No such thing.

By that metric, getting stopped and arrested for a DUI is an injustice because there was "no victim" so leave them alone. But sure as shit if they were to harm someone you cared about you be hollering to hang them from the rafters.

Has anyone been pulled over for lane splitting and/or knows the level of fine you get?

What exactly would you be charged with and how much is the fine?

I don't see anything specific for RCW 46.61.608

IRLJ 6.2 says that the penalty for any infraction not listed is $48. Seems low, so maybe I'm missing something.

With all the laws on the books, im sure they can make up something. illegal lane change if they are nice, or a reckless or negligent driving with an impound if they are pissy.
