I'm not an ADV guy because to me a 600 lb dirt bike is GNDN.

But this - is better.

Still, that thing wants to be a sumo really badly.

Methinks the Yamaha version _might_ be better though.

I hear you on the weight aspect. I think who ever does a good midsize adv bike at 350-375# will do well.

Looks like it has good fuel capacity, but the shock needs some protection.

The T7 Prototype vid looked good, but by the time yamaha makes it real, it will likely be minus a handful of nuts, and plus a bunch of reflectors and smog control stuff.

If the 790 adv anything like the 790 duke.. it will definitely give the T7 a run for the money.

All that said the 1290 adventure is a boat, the 990, 1190 and 1090 are all better platforms.

I love it, except I'm sure I can't afford it! (based on the 690 enduro prices) I think a dr650 is more in my price range right now if I want to scratch my offroading itch.

With the Pro-Cycle 790 kit the DR is a beast. And still cheaper than the KTM.

Really? Dr790 a beast? I have to say I'm a bit of a skeptic.

Granted, I've not seen one, but the article below says it performs very similarly to a xr650l (not the 650r which is a better bike used by the baja pre-runner teams in years past)

I think a standard 690 katoom would slap it silly in a comparison.
Also if you grabbed a used DR off craigslist at $3500 you still need to dump another $3-4000 to build the DR790 from the article.

So your $6500-7500 into a DR that can hang with a 650l.
I seems like that puts you in the same market space as a used 690.

Don't take my word for it:

I'd take a xr650r too!

I've learned from my new Monster that my wallet prefers bang for my buck rather than new and shiny. I mean, I want ALL of the new and shiny, but I get buyers remorse (never bought a new vehicle before my Monster). In hind sight, I should have gotten a used Monster and a used dual sport rather than a new bike. Now I have to wait until my S/O forgets how many bikes I have to get another one (because she definitely remembers how much the Monster cost).

The 650r is definitely a better platform, but harder to find and unfortunately not produced anymore. This video is a DR with the earlier 780 kit. It looks pretty nasty to me, lol.

sounds pretty cool!
but still has crap suspension and brakes.. unless they were touched as well.

This is Pete and I a few years back..

I'm on my old 625 smc w/a full akro setup
Pete is on his current baja xr650.

It was a 2004.

And the 6 straight years before that! Until 2006 when they realized the more nimble CRF450 was faster in the tight sections and still had almost as much top speed as the Big Red Pig! (but not quite)
