Ideas for Olympic Peninsula or other WA destinations within a day of Portland

Looking to do an overnight trip to escape the heat for a day. Leaving Portland, staying somewhere overnight, then returning home.

I have a road bike, and Iím looking for ideas in Washington.

In Washington, Iíve done Carson-Cougar, Washougal river rd, also east of Carson to Goldendale and White Salmon and Trout Lake, but nothing else.

Thoughts?

You don't have to go to WA to get cool; the OR coast is 2-3 hours away by countless very fun, chill roads, and the forecast is for highs between 65-68 all week. I was just thinking of taking a one-day ride starting with this:

Though I might go around that section around Hoskins, it looks a little gravelly, but the rest looks fantastic.

Mount Hood. Temp drops about 10-20 degrees, decent sweepers driving up there, and better than average number of pullouts and passing zones.

Thx for the replies. Warpshatner and Burphel, I should have been more clear about why I was asking about Washington.

Iíve ridden all over the State of Oregon upwards of 80-90%, including many of the roads between I-5 and the coast and on Hood many times from various directions).

I havenít done much in Washington and was looking for new ideas bc I donít know the roads. Sorry that was not clear.

Warpshatner, a good twist on the ride you sent is to take 411 from Nashville, through Logsdon, to Siletz. Also great is 229 from Siletz up to Kernville. And Burphel, I agree about the sweepers on Hood, particularly on rte 35.

I just did a short ride report on Windy Ridge. Here's a video edit (another one of the full on board coming).

This is a route I would consider if I had an overnight option, depending on how much riding you want to do. Otherwise, I would recommend incorporating any of these highways:

I haven't spent any time on the OR or WA coast yet, but need to do so. The Cascades are just so much more accessible to me and I love being in the mountains.

Well, if you ride east of the Cascades you'll be riding into hotter than Hades temperatures this next week.

I suggest the standard loop around Olympic Penninsula for cooler weather and scenery; likely have traffic in parts, but you know that...

I was thinking something along these lines.

GMps - FS-25>Chinook/White Passes Loop>Skate Creek Rd>SR's 7/508>Spencer Rd>W Valley Hwy/SR-411.

However, when checking the local weather forecasts, you would be continuously ascending into comfort, descending into heat (probably spending more time in the later). Coastal may be a better option for beating the heat. Also, I have no idea whats available for AirBnB accommodations along the route.

I'd look into the back side of Mt St. Helen's, then up to white pass drop over to the hot side just long enough to get to Chinook pass. Then take that into Enumclaw and make your way over to the Peninsula. Up to Sequim, over to the coast and back down to Astoria... There's a lot of fun roads to be had.

Sequim has their tourist Lavender Days this weekend. I'm not sure the impact it will be on traffic there.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Gonna try to figure it out tonight. Accommodations in Neah Bay (and even Port Angeles) are tough b/c I'm planning so late for a summer Friday night. I'll look at these ideas from today.
