I went on an adventure

Just wanted post up because still a week after this all has happened, I'm still super stoked.

Start at the beginning. Second to last track day with OPRT I go to the track with Charlie (TwistedRacer) with my newly acquired 2004 R1. This bike had been my dream bike, the one I must own, since it was released. All in all this is a great day, met new friends, learned a lot, got to go fast. Awesome day by any rider's standard.

The one problem was that I didn't get on with the R1 as hoped. It just didn't feel right under me, I put too much pressure on my wrists, the reach to the bars is too long and just generally didn't get comfortable on the bike. I almost instantly decide that I'll sell the bike over the winter or trade it for a 600 in the spring time when all the squids come out of hibernation and decide they want "a real bike."

Well fast forward to October 10. Posted something on a FB group asking about some comparisons on bikes. I love my FZ1, but want something sportier and lighter for track duties, but I was also considering something as an Swiss army knife, so to speak. I get some great feedback, but here comes Charlie again, from that day forward he will be lovingly referred to as The Great Enabler. Charlie makes a compelling argument for dedicated machines. So my search takes a turn and I have direction. I talk to a new friend and she becomes instrumental in this adventure (proper thanks at the end, don't want to spoil it now). After these conversations, I need to get on one of these to even make sure they fit. Luckily a local dealer had a used one so I make the trek to Seattle on a Saturday afternoon (Oct 14) to try it out. Once I got on it, I knew. The ergonomics are great. The reach is right, my legs aren't cramped, I can mover around the bike. Aces! Problem... she's not cheap. I spent less than $3k on the R1, this is over $10k. Selling this is to wife is nigh impossible, but I'm in love. I scour the net and I find a few prospects.

All week I anguish. Talking to Charlie, who's enabling me, and the "new friend" telling me what to look for, what to watch out for, no don't even think about that one. I away from home on work (normal for me), but I can't get the wife to talk about it seriously. I willing to make some serious concessions on my end to make this new purchase, sell R1 and sumo. Go from three good bikes to two. I'm serious about this bike. All week goes by, and I just decide Friday night that I'm going to get a trailer hitch installed so I can haul my own bike around next year, whatever that happens to be. I make the appointment for Saturday morning at 8 am. After some further discussions with the wife and by that, I mean begging her, she relents, gives in and ok's me to buy the new bike.

Saturday (Oct 21) morning at 8 am I'm at the U-Haul in Spanaway getting the trailer hitch installed. I contact the seller of the bike while I'm waiting for the installation. Seller turns out to be a friend of the owner and he's selling it as a favor to the friend, weird but ok. I want the bike ASAP, so the wife can't change her. I want to pick the bike up Sunday. Seller says that he can't meet Sunday morning because he's going to a football game and will be tailgating early. NOOO!!! He then decides to contact the owner to see if he'll meet me. Owner says, yes... game on. It takes 3 hours for U-Haul to install the towing hitch and wiring, but I'm going to make this happen.

I get home and pack an overnight bag. I'm calling some close friends to go with me as I'll need some support for this. No one is able to go on short notice. Son of a... wife suggests cousin that lives in our neighborhood. I call him, he pauses for a second when I ask him to go... then agrees. GAME ON!!! He needs half an hour to get ready. Perfect, I go to the bank get the cash and pick up the trailer, from a different U-Haul facility.

At 1 pm we're loaded and headed to San Jose, CA to buy a motorcycle.

In true PNW fashion the weather is awesome:

Little while later we're into the great state of Oregon:

At this point, we're forced to stop in Jantzen Beach at the Home Depot to buy some weight for the trailer. Need to get some weight on the tongue.

About 8:45 pm we roll into Medford for a pitstop:

Pit stop took longer than I thought, but In-n-Out is worth it.

10:07 pm, "You got any fruit?"

We finally stop for the night in Red Bluff, California at 12:45 am. Took almost 12 hours to make it.

The next morning we wake up to a beautiful Northern California morning,

And at 7:35 am we finally got sunrise:

We roll into San Jose at 11:30 am or so. Meet the seller at his house, I test ride the bike, he knocks a couple of dollars off the agreed upon price and just like that I'm the proud owner of a 2013 Aprilia RSV4 R APRC.

She's almost completely stock except for a few tasteful mods, bar end mirrors and protection all around.

We get the bike loaded up and strapped in for the long ride home.

Take one last look at my new baby before we set out:

For some reason it took a long time to get out of the Bay Area and headed north on the 5. In hindsight I should have paid the toll and we would have made better time, oh well.

Twilight over Mt Shasta:

All said and done we got home at 4 am Monday morning and got the new bike in the garage for safe keeping.

Garage for now, front to back: R1, FZ1, GG sumo, RSV4.

I'm happy. I was tired all this week, but I'd do it all over again in heartbeat.

A huge special thanks to Jennifer Wehmeyer (the new friend), Charlie and my cousin Ryan.

Nice adventure! Fine looking machine.

I was thinking as I read, to top things off, maybe a turn would be made at Willows for an impromtu trackday at ThunderHill.

Oh I thought about really hard. If I didn't have the cousin with me it might have happened. I had my track gear with me.

Congrats on the new bike! Curious what size are you? I assume the RSV is a little more compact?

Great adventure. Love the bike!

As for In-n-Out... meh. I've had it before, and it's nothing to write home about. So many places have better burgers and fries.

Congratulations on a beautiful machine. The yellow looks awesome on that bike, and I'm normally not a huge fan of that color.

There's nothing like a V4!!
