Hwy 20 closed

Bummer

A wildfire burning near Winthrop will close state Highway 20 indefinitely, the Washington State Department of Transportation said Monday, July 12.

“There is no estimate for when the highway will reopen so people should plan to use U.S. Highway 2 or Interstate 90 for cross-state travel,” WSDOT tweeted Monday.

Monday’s closure will be between mileposts 172 and 174 about 20 miles west of Winthrop, near Early Winters, for fire response activity, WSDOT tweeted.

There is a thread in the Lounge ( you know, the off topic area ) about that, which has been up for three weeks and you have not commented in it yet.

I specifically posted this in the Motorcycle forum for people who love motorcycling. Many of us love motorcycles because they allow us to get away from the stresses of day to day life.

I would appreciate it if you would keep the politics in the Lounge.

New? As in the last three weeks? Like I said, there has been a thread in the Lounge about what's in your craw for three weeks and nary a peep.

If it was an interest of yours, then you would be adding to the discussion there, not crapping on a PSA about a road closure.

I'm glad I got to see it in its full green beauty last weekend. I'm kind of surprised I didn't see any smoke while I was there.

Same here. I did see some smoke between Tonasket and Omak to the west, but not sure of the source.

Any good riding up there? I have never ridden in that direction.

Absolutely. The only part of hwy20 that is mediocre is the west end. I really like hwy20 from Concrete all the way to ID. Between Tonasket and Kettle Falls it goes over Sherman Pass.

You can also head south off of 20 down 21 and 25 are both great until you go over the Columbia and Spokane rivers respectively, can't remember how they are south of that.

Last year I took 395 from Kettle Falls north to Boulder Creek Rd. Then onto Curlew, Toroda, Chesaw then to Oroville and back down. Great slow ride in a remote area with mediocre roads.

Lots of good riding east of the big lump, just takes me awhile to get over there from the B'ham area.

I'll have to give it a try later in the year when things cool down. My goal for every ride all summer is to either remain at elevation or get to the west side of the cascades.

That sounds like a good plan. I haven't been out that way on a bike since I did a Neah Bay run mabey three years ago. I haven't done any riding south of that along the coast. If I get a break from work a loop around on 101 looks fun.

We were gassing up in Duvall Monday in preparation for a trip around WA, first night to be spent at Early Winters. A couple of duffers on their bikes were chatting with us and made an aside about Hwy 20. Good thing! Turns out they closed 20 at 10.

So, we reversed our trip but didn't manage to avoid the fires. We had to make a second trip revision due to the Chuweah Creek fire which had the Cache Creek road to Nespelem closed. Route 155 North from Grand Coulee was also closed due to that fire, but reopened during lunch, so we went over to Omak through the still-smoking Nespelem with the active fire front just a couple of thousand feet away.

We would have gone home over Hwy 20 yesterday, but it's still closed, so we went down 97 and home via 2, getting a good look at the Red Apple fire and fire support aircraft. Not too often can you get a live-action view of a helicopter filling its tank from the Wenatchee River.
