Heh. Powder coat? I'd almost bet money that the metallic flake purple used was the original contents of the paint can.

Yeah, you right. My brain was impaired by the overall appearance of that horror and went to the default coating it knows. My bad.

Right now they are virtually the same price at my local dealers, right around $8k for 2018's. Makes it a little harder to pick

A driveway can be considered a short road, so technically he's correct...

technically as soon as the bike leaves pavement, it's been off-road

I was talked into looking at a 2003 Suzuki TL1000R today. My girlfriend says her cousin has one he dropped and scared him off of sportbikes. He was asking for $4,000 a while ago, but thinks it's worth $1,500 now. The idea was that it was running but needed some TLC. No problem, I've always thought they were kinda cool and I have my own garage again.

Problem is, in person this thing looks like it went end-over-end into a ditch and then went into a corner to feed the mice for a few years. He's talking about how he used to be able wheelie it in first through third... Until first gear crapped out... but second is still good enough to start out because it's so torquey... this is a bike that "whomped on Ducatis" afterall. "It's a kickass bike that everybody wanted."

"Just needs the main fairing and the reservoirs." He may or may not have swapped out the engine from a TLS, may or may not have an overflow tank to replace the one that's shattered, might have a new headlight fairing somewhere... Swapped out the forks and radiator himself... "might want a new rear brake"... Maybe has all the parts for the original engine under a tarp in the garage, "probably needs new ram scoops"... but "the tires are good" despite the fact that it's been sitting at least two years and the rear tire is square. No mention of the dangling wires on the left side, just that "it has integrated rear signals" that got shoved into the tail and are held kinda sorta in place by tape. He "had it all back good as new" until "his buddy" did... something that I didn't care to listen to details on. The right side engine cover is worn almost completely through, there's no oil visible in the sight glass, there's bubbling on the side of the fuel tank, and unexplained water dribbling from somewhere. He "can probably get $1,000 just for the Yoshi exhaust" though.

I would have walked away 30 seconds in, but my girlfriend wanted to visit with family. I'm half tempted to tell the cousin to sell the exhausts and I'll give him $250 for the rest, but I don't know what it would cost me to rebuild it... or how long to find all the issues that I couldn't see.

I love stories like that. Can always use a good chuckle over geniuses like that.

Poor bike... Its like a puppy in a bad home, you just wanna save it.
