Talking Chinook Pass Ride

Okay, campers, it's about time for the passes to open up again. Every year I like to indulge in a little personal tradition by trying to be one of the first motorcycles to ride over Chinook Pass. It's totally cool (literally and figuratively) to ride a road with 10 feet of snow on each side, to be rewarded by sweeping mountain vistas and great food and coffee at the Woodshed Restaurant in Nile, Washington. Hopefully the cooks there have finally cracked the code on baking their cinnamon rolls so I can load up.

This is not one of those banzai fast rides, merely a nice ride up through the mountains, although once I'm done doing photo ops at the east summit viewpoint I don't really let a lot of grass grow under the bike. Anyone who is up for an unforgettable experience is welcome to tag along as long as you are willing to play nicely with others.

There are a few considerations.
  • I am not one of those people who get up at the crack of 09:00. I start early, so if you don't know (or accept) that 6:30 comes twice a day this probably is not your cup of tea. I usually depart the Safeway fuel station in Enumclaw at roughly 08:30 and head to the summit.
  • If the snow is particularly amazing there will quite possibly be stops for bike photos. Nothing says "up yours, you wimps" like a picture of your bike next to a 10 foot wall of snow.
  • When I leave the east viewpoint my feet will not touch the ground, barring the unexpected, until I hit the Woodshed parking lot. That's about a 45 minute ride, and, although the concept is foreign to me, I know some folks who consider that a bit of an endurance stretch.
  • After chow the next planned stop is for fuel in Naches, and after that my only firm destination is back home for dinner. Disclaimer: I despise backtracking.
  • This will be a weather/schedule dependent operation. If it is raining in the lowlands I am not heading up a 5,430 foot mountain pass. Also, I have potential scheduling conflicts, both professional and personal in late May and early June, which may completely torpedo the entire project until July. If I have to reschedule so be it, but anyone wanting to sedately tag along will still be welcome.

Of course as opening day approaches I will update things.

  .

Definitely, one of the most beautiful places in the PNW, and one of my personal fav's too.

For those who have never been up there, I'd highly recommend making this trip at least once (even if you can't get out of bed at 6:30).

Larry, I want to do this as it is probably my last opportunity. Please cut me in on details as they develop. I will follow along in this thread as well.

Hopefully we can discuss this at the May bike night.

Like last year I have a want to tag along on this. A good cinnamon roll is too good to pass up. Great views, roads and company certainly don't hurt either!

However, also like last year, it will be very dependent on what family and work needs from me.

I guess it's time to post these photos again of the "10 feet of snow on each side", from a Chinook Pass ride, first time for this forum.

In. Larry, this sounds great. Enjoyed reading your previous posts on this ride.

Will there be a meet-up place in Kitsap for any Kitsap riders?

Hadn't really thunk it out that far, but if we pull the trigger on this I guess the Mullenix Park and Ride would work.

You know, if I was gonna get back on the ol' crusier sometime...this seems like it might be fun. I'd have to come over the day before, and would likely head home after getting gas on the east end of the ride. Still...hmm.
