Thanks guys. I gotta say the experience was amazing, up there with marrying the love of my life and seeing my kids born. Went as a spectator in 2016, got salt fever bad. The bike was a basket case, spent the last two years getting it together. My first run was so moving that I was screaming in my helmet going on to the course and crying after my run. Salt racers are about the coolest, most kind people I have ever met. You don't have to run for a record, at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials there is a category called Run Whatcha Brung, in which you can bring your street bike (properly prepped) and try it out. I watched a lovely woman named Sarah take her new husband's daily rider Aprilia Mille to somewhere around 150 mph. Some honeymoon! Costs about the same as a track day to run on the most famous go fast course on the planet, and you get to play for almost a week.

One of the most interesting things that happened was to find that Delvene Reber - the incredibly together organizer of the event - lives in Poulsbo. There is a strong Warshingtonian presence at the event (check out Sodium Distortion as one great example) and racers from all over the country show up. There were even teams from France and Italy.

We had a film crew following us around and hopefully we will have a short documentary about the experience in a month or two. Here's a little ad I threw together for my audio kit business. Stay salty, my friends.

Congrats Doc! You're absolutely right on all points. This is an amazing event that everyone should go see.

This was my second year volunteering and I will be back again next year for both volunteering and bringing a bike. I did the run whatcha brung, and as is expected that sets the hook, so now I have to figure which direction to go as far as putting together a bike. I have my GSX-R1K track bike that I may use since I already have it.

Stop by the Sodium Distortion pits next year and say hello.

Thanks! I did stop by and had a nice talk with Bill Woods about helping out. Since Del lives like ten minutes from me I'm hoping that I can help out with the off season prep stuff.

And yeah, even as a spectator it's an amazing experience. There is no other place like it. My videographer has been on cross-continent overland excursions and diving trips all over the world, and he was saying that the salt was way up there in terms of unique and extreme environments. I think we went thru two cans of Neutrogena SPF 110 sun screen. That and a safari hat saved my ginger ass...

I was down at El Mirage a couple times. Took my rental down the course bouncing off the speed limiter at 118. Actually got boring after a few miles...
The interpretation of the rules was interesting and not something I had considered before seeing it in person.
Met and BS'd with Don Vesco many years ago. He educated me on 'salt' as opposed to asphalt as the conversation started because I was riding one of the 'new at the time' slippery crotch rockets. Fun stuff.
