Annette A. Carrion - Dead at 33

A motorcyclist from Irvine died Saturday, March 31, when her motorcycle went off the side of Highway 74 as she headed toward Orange County, the California Highway Patrol said.

Just after 10:30 a.m., Annette A. Carrion, 33, was riding a 2015 Triumph east of Morrell Canyon, at 70 to 80 mph, a CHP news release said. Because of her speed, the CHP said, she was unable to make the curve in the highway, which is also known as Ortega Highway in the Santa Ana Mountains.

Carrion veered down the embankment and was thrown from her motorcycle, the CHP said. She died at the scene.

* Edited to change her age (at death) to 33 which seems more accurate and is reflected in newer reports.

Sad, but if you're going to use public roads as if racetracks then eventually it will catch up. A road like Ortega leaves little room for mistakes.

It could have been a bird, a heart attack, a text message, a car going the other way, or fucking aliens, but CHP pronounces "it was speed". I wonder what SMD they used.

Risky business, this motorcycling.

Also, too soon for name-based joke?

All it takes is to watch some of her other vids of her rides on Ortega to know how she rides it. And with that road, there were probably plenty of witnesses.

Sad story. To paraphrase Casey Stoner, "Obviously her ambition outweighed her talent."

In the milliseconds between the root cause of your excursion and your demise, I seriously doubt that you will have any thought about rationalizing the crash. If, and I pray that this never happens to you, your incident leaves you on the ground, conscious, and with minutes (and pain) before you expire, I can pretty much guarantee that the last thoughts going through your mind will be "At least I was doing something I love."

[Edit: When I refer to "you/your" above, that is directed towards the collective "you", not to anyone personally.]

Whatever the cause of her crash, be it stupidity, nature, mechanical failure, or something else, someone lost a sister, daughter, girlfriend, or best friend. A sad situation in any case.

And I will add, the road conditions. I stopped hot footing on the street when I encountered dirt/gravel spread all over a corner I knew well. I happened to be just cruising along so it was a non issue but would have gone bad had I gone around it 'at speed'. Too many unknown issues on the streets that will get you in trouble...

She sports a pretty decent set of carry-on bags. I know...it's not the name joke you were expecting...and for that...I'm truly sorry.

They rail 74 and they get complacent because they think they "know" the road. Which is precisely why every time I go out anywhere I have two basic thoughts in my head:

1) I don't know this road (even though I may have traversed it 1000 times).

2) I have no more "skills" than anybody else...I just try not to violate the basic laws of two-wheel physics...

Really? Are backroads, with other traffic, no runoff, driveways, and other obstacles designed for "fast and aggressive" riding? No they aren't. Are racetracks designed for that kind of riding? Yes they are.

In relation to this particular situation, the speed limits on Ortega are 35-40 depending on the stretch of road. Having watched some of her videos from that road she is consistently hitting 70+. That's double the speed limit on a very dangerous and often very busy road.

Yeah, went and watched a few of her vids as well. Pushing pretty hard in some of them. It looked like she did some track days and maybe a Superbike School? She was cute too... Any time we loose a rider it is a bummer. More so with the cute ones! RIP rider.

I've watched a few of her vids, she seemed like a nice girl, definitely hot.
It's a sad thing to lose a rider like her.

I’ve sort of given up on trying to determine what “safe speed” is for any particular person/situation. It’s sure seems like she’s run this thing hundreds of times with her boyfriend in tow...as it seems it may have been even in this case.

Was she running it too hard?...well...obviously if she either fixated or had some kind of a “failure to negotiate” event...she was running it too hard.

I do sort of object to this whole “at least she died doing what she loved” motif...I can tell you right now nobody “loves” missing a turn going off of an embankment and dying from blunt force trauma...Sounds like a pretty crappy way to end the morning...
