Almost rear-ended someone today!

Was in traffic on the way home today and passed a police officer. I was a bit nervous as my license plate is definitely not mounted "correctly" and I don't like to hang in front of them if I can avoid it. After I passed him, I look in my mirror to see if the officer has a change of pace.

Well, as I do this, traffic comes to a dead stop in front of me. By the time I look up and have only about a second to react. A combination of sheer luck and 60,000 miles/10 years of commuting by motorcycle got me out of trouble. My front tire was equal with the back of his rear tire. If I had gone just a few inches further, the front left of my bike would have hit his rear bumper. I was going about 25-30mph.

Nothing like a close call like this to ground you back to reality... I'll definitely have to pay more attention in areas like this from now on!

Side note: So glad I did that suspension upgrade a few months ago to stiffen everything up. If I had the stock FZ-07 suspension, there is no way I would have been able to stop little ol' 230lb me with the level of nose dive that came with it...

Nice outcome of an object lesson on prioritization of tracked hazards.

Nice recovery. On my commutes, I do many, many very quick glances and my head is swiveling hard. I really do not think we (drivers) need to "freak out" when there are police. I am not a fan of cagers who slam on breaks when they see police and we are all doing legal speed.

I mentioned this back in an older thread. I spent too long looking over my shoulder to get over into HOV on 405 Kennydale area (by Seahawks camp) and when I turned my head forward, I could count the dust particles on the backside of a stopped in traffic SUV.

I just looked to the left and pushed left (thank goodness I was left of center as well) on the bar thinking at least I was going to clip the bumper with my right leg. Made it through.

I know... I do the same thing without even thinking about it - it seems to be out of pure instinct. I am trying to break the habit. TBH if the officer wasn't in the lane next to me, there is a good chance this situation could have been avoided lol

I feel like it will lead to a situation like this one where because of an officer, I brake at the wrong time and end up sliding out.

Glad your outcome wasn't worse, but maybe simple solution is to mount your license plate so you aren't paranoid about it?
