New rider buying a used Yamaha.

Hello forum members.

I am a new rider trying to get into motorcycling.

I just passed the MSF LTR program and I found a bike I would like to start riding with.

I am meeting up with the seller of a used Yamaha this Wednesday.
It is a fairly new bike but I do not know anything about checking a used motorcycle.

It is a 2019 Yamaha R3 with under 3000 miles.
Is anyone willing to come and take a look and test ride it for me this Wednesday at 3:30 pm in Salmon Creek area in Vancouver please? :D

If the price aligns with NADA or Blue Book, get it.

It is a year old with under 3,000 miles. It has original rubber. Might be due for an oil change and the first maintenance visit. What could be wrong with it, if it is the first owner you are buying it from?

Yamaha is a fantastic company with cutting edge, sexy, quality bikes.

Look at online reviews to see if it tests well and has no recalls or issues for the 2019 model year.

I think I'm off Wed and live in Hazel Dell. I might be able to help and look at it with you, however there's a threat of snow and colder temps. Feel free to contact me.

I second this take. Check for crash damage, scratches and whatnot, bent levers/bars, broken lights. Other than that, 3,000 miles on an R3 doesn't offer much time to ruin the bike.

Hey Slimjim - Do you have someone coming with you to see the bike? Let me know if not, I can post a note on my riding group and we have quite a few riders from your area.

I am paying $226/year with State Farm with $250,000/$500,000 liability, collision, comprehensive and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. I think you are getting a reasonable rate.

I would definitely get uninsured/underinsured coverage as many people are illegally operating without insurance out there.

Also I joined the American Motorcyclist Assoc. and get towing coverage as part of the dues. I have used it once already for a flat tire and they were great.

Kind of related. I once low sided up in the mountains and the towing coverage I had through my insurance was not sufficient to get a tow truck up the mountain, it was "too far out" even though it was on a state highway. Only AAA said they would do it. I didn't join at that time (someone volunteered to get me using their personal truck) but did get AAA later on based on the feedback from the towing companies.

I am inferring that the bike you looked at did not work out. What happened? You have us all invested in your purchase now ;)

The seller wanted to push back the time to 5pm.

So I arrived early and Flyboymedic showed up on time.

The seller was no where to be found.
I texted him via FB chat and he said he was still stuck at work. Then he left the facebook chatroom. He had marked the bike as sold 7 hours prior to that time. I assumed he was sure I was going to buy it.
So there was no way to communicate with him anymore after that.
The AD was gone because it was marked as sold and he left the chatroom.

Flyboymedic and I chatted a little. Nice guy.
Thanks again for willing to help a stranger beginner!

I am now looking to get a new bike through Rollick program. I will see what kind of discount they offer.

That seams like a fair price given you're new and presumably young.

I've been with Progressive for years and swear by them. I totalled a bike and they took care of it quick, even gave me more than what I paid for it.

Also check out Costco if you have a membership. They have a dealer discount.

Good tip^^^^^^^^

Bought my last 2 Kawasaki's through Costco, very nice discounts.

Just bought another car with CC a few weeks ago.

SlimJim Feb 12th 2021 07:41 PM

I think Costco has stopped the PowerSport program.

You are correct, ended in 2020. Did not know that, now I do. THX

If you are not dead-set on a Yamaha, I've bought my last bike from Hillsboro Motorsports and they tend to have new-old stock with prices can be hard to beat. Here is a portion of the inventory that might suit you.

I have been going back and forth between R3 and Ninja 400.
Whoever offers better discount will get my business.
The reviews are good for both bikes. So I am willing to start on either one.
I contacted them now. And I am Waiting for an offer.
Thank you.

That's the problem, he tried and the asshole flaked on him and sent him on a wild goose chase. I suspect it was a scam, but it may that the bike was simply sold out from under him. The good part is that I was able to provide him some guidance, advice, and encouragement, along with a welcome to the community. The used bike market is silly right now because of all the stimulus checks and demand for anything outdoor related. For a bike that's not much less $$$ than a brand new one without all the BS, I'd buy new also if I didn't know what to look for and not knowledgeable. Unfortunately, the picken's are slim and not a lot of people wanting to sell at the height of winter. Of course there will be more bikes in the spring, but the prices aren't going to be coming down to a reasonable level anytime soon.

Olympia dealership is selling 2020 new R3 ABS for $5755 otd. It is kind of far for me.
I am hoping a dealership down here will come close to that deal.

Whatís the dealership name? You might be able to ge them to deliver it to you for a small price. You can also rent a u-haul and pick it up yourself. If not, then I can ask people within my riding group if thereís someone willing to help deliver it to you. You are in Vancouver, WA. Correct?

What u haul truck would be best to carry a bike?

Flyboymedic Feb 15th 2021 09:31 PM

A U-Haul trailer is only $15 to rent. It's awesome. I brought my last bike down from Seattle on one.

U-Haul has a motorcycle specific trailer. Costs $15 approx. Look it up on their website.

To add to this, Uhaul trucks kind of suck for hauling a bike. The wooden rails along the walls are more for keeping items off the shell of the truck and not built for strapping things down. If you strap a bike to them they may break. I've made custom wheel chock setups when using a UHaul truck when I have to (like when also pulling a car), but the trailer is definitely the way to go.

Transported Feb 16th 2021 11:26 AM

I hauled my bike from Southern Oregon with a Uhaul trailer. I agree it worked well, with a good design and the proper straps and a steal of a price. You need a hitch though, if I remember correctly.

SlimJim Feb 16th 2021 03:19 PM

I got an agreeable deal on a new 2020 R3 at the local dealership and purchased it today.
They will deliver for free.
I cannot wait to hit the parking lot and start practicing!!

I do not have a vehicle with a tow hitch.
Thanks everyone for offering help and ideas.
Portland dealers never replied back with a concrete number.
