From the first picture, looks like the truck has a trailer attached. Such a large incoming objected wiped them all off the road. Poor people, thoughts are with the families.

Latest I read was from CBS in Boston. 23 year old driver of the truck crossed the center line then over corrected and jackknifed the trailer. What a tragic crash.

I'm speculating those bikes were being ridden in an awfully tight formation.

I don't think condemnations of the driver are yet justified. Medical condition, swerved to avoid a hazard, who knows why he crossed the line. I suspect we'll know soon, and it's probably his fault alone. But a half dozen bikes at once? My group rides barely park that close together, much less herd up in such proximity while in motion.

Teachable moment: Space=time=safety.

It's all speciation at this point but looking at the photo that shows the truck and trailer, the total length of the two is significant. Then consider that the road in question is a two lane state highway. As you said, we don't know why the driver crossed the line but when he over corrected and jackknifed, his vehicle and trailer likely took up a significant portion of the road width. We don't really know where on the highway that collision took place but if the truck was rounding a curve when he drifted and lost control and if the oncoming bikes were traveling at highway speeds, sight lines and escape options would be limited. Sure, riding in a close group probably multiplied the casualties but even if they were single file there would likely be multiple contacts.

And out control full-size truck with a 30 foot fifth wheel could easily take out a group of bikes as seen above, every riding group ive ever been on has been in close proximity at at least one time or another on every ride, by the age of the driver im betting the phone was involved.

This is exactly why my opinion those dually/ trailer combos to have the same requirements as CDL big rig. Unregulated, untrained, no medical card/exam, overweight - all a recipe for disaster. The fact that the riders may or may not have been close together means nothing if the truck crossed the road at speed. Think about how much time you'd have to react if the bike ahead of you is hurtling toward you domino effect. Same thing at Fossil a few years ago....

Truck was witnessed to be swerving out of control before jackknifing into, and across, oncoming lanes. We're talking a 2 lane country road, probably a 45-50 mph speed limit. At a closing speed of close to 100 mph the bikes don't have to be tight to wipe out a lot of them.

The guy has been driving drunk since he got his fkn license. For six years he has been driving drunk. How does someone like that get a professional driving license? How does someone like that get a license of any kind?

That's the law, if it's under 26,001 gvw you don't need, CDL, training, drug test, medical card nothing to get behind the wheel. Same goes for the blind, deaf geezers behind the wheel of a 40' Winnebago that never drove anything bigger than a station wagon. Supposedly the guy has had multiple DUIs....state should be held accountable for letting the guy behind the wheel of ANYTHING again....much less in a heavy unregulated commercial vehicle. But it's events like this that precipitate change. One incident that brought the national CDL laws was in Anchorage Alaska. A belly dump overloaded by several tons, 3 working brakes out of 12, driver drunk ran a red light took out an attorney and his son. This incident was held up to congress as the poster child of CDL requirements. Trucking industry cried they couldn't possibly meet the requirements, implementing the rules removed almost a third of the nations truck drivers due to past DUI, multiple state license suspensions, drug use, mandatory safety inspections, roadside inspections etc. This is what it takes, sadly so many have to die to make it happen. EDIT: Supposedly when the cops went to arrest this guy at his house there was heroin found.....
