Help me choose a new bike... Donít worry about why...
 
So, insurance totaled the VROD.

A blessing in disguise as I was already tired of the small tank and lack of bag options. But I know better now what I want.

Looking at something like a Street Glide now. OR an adventure touring as I am getting into fly fishing and this is my primary means of transportation.

I know absolutely nothing about adventure touring, so if you guys have tips on your favorites, thatíd be great.

Looking to be under 9-10k.

Your thread title gave me a good laugh.

Too bad about the vrod.

Take a look at the Triumph Tiger 800. It's a good balance for on and off road.

Lots of options in the ADV sector.

If you decide to go the street bike route don't forget to look at the Triumph Rocket 3.

Well that sucks.

Street Glide is a good choice if you want bags. It won't be as quick as the VRod, or as nimble, but they're popular for a good reason.

An Adventure-touring bike may be more useful for you if you're planning on doing anything off the beaten path. Plus more tire options. The Versys 1000 is a popular choice. KTM pops up a lot. If nothing else AT's are not nearly as expensive to fix if they get dropped.

AdvRider is the adventure touring forum, although it covers most everything now. You can read threads there for pretty much forever.

Best of both worlds: Triumph Scrambler. Reasonable handling on fire roads, lighter than most big ADV bikes, welcome at most Harley rallies. You'd have to rig some saddlebags, but that's not too tough.

Bummer. Hope the insurance takes care of you. The BMW gs800 is the funnest motorcycle I have ridden on the street besides my beloved ZX14. The only reason I don't have one is because I am a absolute idiot on the dirt. Spent 10 years motocrossing and believe if you ain't crashing you are doing it wrong. Good luck with this search!

^^ haha. Iím not very good at waiting. But the 790 does look fun. So far I like a Tribute Tiger I found on Craigslist. But Iím just opening the door on the adventure touring class, so Iím trying not to jump in before I do my due diligence.

Fair more reliable than any HD. And that should be a BIG concern since you will be riding daily.

versys its a great sport touring bike, can put some semi knobie tires on it and they do just fine off road (know people who do the d2d race on them) they have loads of bag options , upright seating position, and same motor as the 650 ninja but with a few different parts inside so it gets more torque

A sorted (recalls done) used F800GS. Ignore the "buzzy engine," complaint every single reviewer has made. The engine smooths out dramatically with mileage, and really only buzzes over 6K rpm (> 95 mph in 6th) [redline is 8500]. It is glassily smooth below that - vibrates less than my ZX-6R, which is nicely tuned.

Mine has 60,000 miles on it, doesn't use oil or coolant, and returns 48-53 mpg, no matter how hard (or how slowly in city traffic) I ride it.

If you get one, you'll want to do a tubeless conversion to the rims, though - that was worth every bit of effort.

Does great with knobbies - wore TKC 80s like a champ.

Been doing a lot of research and inventory searches.

I think I've settled on either a BMW 1200GS or a Triumph Tiger Explorer. There are a few available around me, but they have pretty high miles. I had a temporary lapse in judgment in which I was strongly considering a used HD Street Glide, but I was only going to be able to afford one that had either been dropped or that had 110k+ miles.

There is a 2014 Tiger Explorer with 44k miles (eesh) that I'm strongly considering at the moment:

"Beautiful Triumph Tiger Explorer in excellent condition. 1216cc, 6 speed, Shaft Drive, Premium Adventure Bike. OEM 12V powered Top Box to charge your phone and accessories. Triumph OEM Panniers. There are better options thousands of miles away, but I'm in a pinch and really need to get something by this weekend.

Do you think the mileage and price is reasonable enough with all the extra features and excellent condition (no drops/blemishes)?

I don't know much about those triumphs,but that seems like a lot of miles. Don't be in a rush,you can miss a weekend ride. Keep looking and get the best bike you can with the least miles on it.

Here's another one to look at,I don't know much about them but they seem to be nice bikes. And this one only has 750 miles. You might be able to get him down a little to be at your $10000 budget you mentioned.
