3 day ride and HWY 129 along Snake river

I am planning a 3 day ride Portland to eastern Oregon, into Washington a bit and back to Portland. Plan is to head out Friday June 24, back Sunday.

I mapped out a route which is generally:
East on 26 to John Day. North on 7 at Austin. To McEwan into Baker City. Then 203 to Medical Springs and Hot Lake. Then to LaGrand. From LaGrand up Highway 82. I have a choice where 82 and 204 "T" at Elgin. I can head west and work my way back on north side of Columbia. Other possibility is to head north on 3 and then 129 into Clarkson / Lewiston along the snake.

General route: https://goo.gl/maps/cjdp6X8AAR42

Many years ago I drove south from Clarkson along the Snake and on into Enterprise. I am wondering if anyone knows about the condition of the road. My recollection is fair bit of gravel on parts of the route however in a discussion with a friend (that also has not been here for a long time) thinks all paved. Here is that section:

I would like to know if any pitfalls in the overall route and specifically about road conditions for that bit heading up into the Lewiston area.

HWY 3/129 between Enterprise and Clarkston is paved the whole way. I highly recommend it.

Last time I rode 3/129 it was as if the center line was a mere hint of a suggestion to bikes and cars alike North of Boggens Oasis

That first link was 19 min long ride, that's going to be a long three days.

The hells canyon scenic byway

I believe the forest service road you're talking about is freshly paved. We had to wait for the paving road crew when we were there last summer. It follows above the Snake River canyon to a viewpoint though you can't actually see the river down in the deep gorge. Simply an incredible ride there as well as hitting Oregon's "little tail of the Dragon" over that way is also not to be missed!

The trip was great. Covered 987 miles in three days. Lots of great roads for riding and amazing scenery. I posted a noted about it in the "trip reports" forum. I found the road between Enterprise and Clarkston was indeed paved however there is road work on that long descent into Clarkston so gravel and oil on it awaiting asphalt. I expect it to have fresh pavement very soon.

Trip report here: June 24/25/26 2016 bike ride
