2019 American Flat Track Daytona TT!!

Thursday is the season opener for American Flat Track at the Daytona TT. It will be special for several reasons, first they are using the paved section of the tri-oval as part of the track, which will make it fast and Supermoto-ish.

Second motorsport legend Jeff Ward will be racing in the singles class aboard a KTM 450. First seen as the kid doing the stand up wheelie in On Any Sunday, the former 125mx, 250mx, 500mx, Supercross, and Supermoto champion will be a force to be reckoned with at 57yo! You can watch live starting at 10am at www.fanschoice.tv

Also racing will be the brand new AMA Hooligans championship for 750cc+ multi cylinder street bikes. And among them will be a guy named Travis Pastrana riding Roland Sand's twisted creation, a Suzuki GT750 2 stroke triple!?!

I can't wait! AFT has really rebuilt an exciting, competitive and fan friendly american motorcycle racing series. Indian deserves a great deal of the credit, but Yamaha, Kawasaki, KTM and maybe Harley are all upping their game this year. Unfortunately all the success has kinda hurting us Northwest fans. With large track events like the Minnesota Mile and Meadowlands coming onto the schedule, it's hard for AFT to look at places like Castle Rock and Grays Harbor that filled about 1000 seats. Even Calistoga is out now after the fires and limited infrastructure to support a big race. What's really great is that both the singles and twins classes are equally exciting and a quality 450 is available and in most riders budgets. Hopefully some of the northwest tracks and our abundance of rider talent can grow and show we are worthy of another look. If Travis Pastrana is getting involved, that tells ya that flat track is at a whole new level. That guy is gold! He's a good guy and fans love him. Thanks for the post, I'll be watching and I just got my tickets for Rapid City.

I'll be able to watch that tomorrow and looking forward to it. They're building the track now on the video feed.

I like it that Pastrana keeps bringing two strokes to the fight. Had a couple Suzuki GT750's and an H2 Kawasaki, as well as 3 KX500's. One of them a street SuMo. Loves me some big two stroke power!

This was fantastic to watch- thanks for posting @PeteN95! As far as I'm concerned it was supermoto racing, but the experts might disagree. I wish there was more of this to watch in the series and I wish it were more popular. It appears there's one more in a few months. Super Hooligan racing- meh... Flat track racing doesn't excite me, and I can't seem to get into Supercross either, but for some reason I really dig supermoto racing!

I've considered attending a few of the local supermoto races and will do my best to make it out.

Mmm, I would agree with ya, that was very much a supermoto track. The transition from the paved bank onto a dirt corner was awesome. It certainly put some of the traditional flat track riders out of their comfort zone. Plus Janisch on his 450 Yam was turning laps faster than 95% of the twins class. Likely he could have finished on the podium in the twins final... That's a tough track. Fun to watch.

As I understand it the Hooligan was supposed to be a run whacha brung class. Appears that its evolving to pure racing machinery....do I have it right? Wrestling those heavy guys around a bull ring oval doesn't appear to do much for spectator appeal.

It wasn't the hooligan racing I expected. I guess if the rules say street bike frame, now a days with the various scramblers and the FTR 1200's the door is wide open. I sure wouldn't want to be on a old virago next to Joe Kopp. I guess fan response and sponsorship will tell.

You can watch the races on video, but it's not as fun as watching live-

Unfortunately that happens with all forms of racing. Starts simple enough then morphs into 'crazy' money and pro's. Take a look at the history of the Funny Car class in car racing and what it evolved into. Actually, any racing history kind of goes the same way. Small time stock car racing has stayed fairly close to it's roots I think. Got to have 'something' the small guys can afford!
