Sand blasting titanium exhaust

I just picked up a used Akropovic titanium exhaust for cheap and want to clean it up. Scotchbrite pads work OK but itís not cleaning up as well as I want. Has anyone sandblasted Ti pipes before? Any issues with it?

I imagine you might want to try bead blasting rather than sand. Or you might try a heavier scotchbrite pad, like a 7446. Those are the gnarly looking gray ones with silicon carbide abrasive on them. Or maybe 400 wet or dry paper. Or you could try a scotchbrite flap wheel. Any of those will probably look closer to the original brushed finish than blasting.

Ive read an ammonia cleaner like windex allowed to soak followed by rinsing does a good job.

Got any pictures? Might help to know what you are looking at... Torching it might be the easiest solution...

Oven cleaner

Sand blast ti? Definitely not. Typical Ti alloy for exhausts is much softer than steel.

stainless steel cleaner, like for ovens and refrigerators. not sure about it, but just maybe the ti is close enough to (the very hard to clean) stainless for it to work.

Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like I have a few means to try other than sandblasting it.

Wen I media blasted some small Ti parts I was amazed at how many of the pretty blue/white sparks it produced. Was a bit worried about creating a dust explosion so have re considered.

Look into the lasers. They do a great job for a lot of odd shaped items.

I have seen a titanium fire at work from sparks. Very hard to put out. Sort of like when I caught a pile of magnesium on fire on concrete when I was much younger... Oops.
