Angry New Engine?

Long story short I fuckered up my head pretty good. Mistimed exhaust cam somehow and Bob's your uncle, detonated one exhaust valve and broke the other. Detonated valve wreaks havoc on aluminum head and you want to cry to your mother.

So at this point, you get to reflect and ponder what could be.

I have a few options at this point.

1. Fix damage. Send to machinist, they install new valve seats for exhaust, do proper build up and then I rebuild.

2. Find used head. 02-05 FSE, not the most common and seemingly in very short supply.

3. Install different engine. Something similar with better parts availability, DRZ?

Anyone have any thoughts? Suggestions? Success installing different engine in chassis? Spare head lying around?

What's the cost of a used engine? Might be the easiest thing with the least amount of hassle.

Maybe "Jack's complete lack of surprise" instead?

New engine. Looks like to much damage in the cylinder unless you get e really big bore kit. Sorry about your loss.

The cylinder nick does not look to be big enough to interfere with the rings so may be able to be smoothed and run. The piston has some damage but there again, smooth the sharp edges to eliminate hot spots and you may be Ok. After that you are still looking at a head or a repair to it. It may still be a bit of a crap shoot on the piston as you never know how much stress smacking the valve parts around hurt it and other parts.
It kind of boils down to cash you have to spend and how much do you like the bike? You can always part them out and go with something else...
OEM Cycle in Oregon has a bunch of parts and he is a great guy to deal with. They do some limited work as well. Used Dirt Bike Parts for Sale

If it were me, I'd source a replacement head (assembly if possible) and piston, and smooth out that burr on the cylinder. As stated, it doesn't look to go low enough to affect the rings on the piston.

Unless a whole engine is less expensive. You could also source an engine that is damaged somewhere else and conbind the 2.

What is this out of? Google says a GasGas. Just curious cuz I'm not familiar with "02-05 FSE".

It's a GasGas SM 400 FSE. That was my bad, I copied my post from the GasGas forum, so it's kind of given over there.

There's a complete 450 engine with good compression on ebay for $550.

There's also a "complete" bike with bent valves in Reno, but I can't get the guy to send me pictures of the head. If the head is good I'd drive to Reno for that bike because it's got some extraordinarily rare parts that I'd really like to have, Ohlins suspension and rare tank. Not to mention it'd be nice to have a set of dirt wheels as well. Even if the head needed seats and guides, it'd be a steal for the other parts.

I agree about the nick in the cylinder. It's above the rings and shouldn't be a problem if I de-burr it and the nikasil is worth anything.

The problem is actually getting the parts. They're rare.

I think $550 for that engine is going to be better than repairing the one you have.

Gas gas makes some cool machines, but despite any temptations, I stay away, and a big reason is the parts availability.

Well I've decided to rebuild. I purchased a complete head from a friend in the great white north and a NOS piston and head gasket.

Need to get a few smaller things like a base seal, but I will be under the cost of that engine on fleabay.

The reason I didn't go the engine route is two fold. The first is that I don't know what I'm getting into with it and it's been sitting for at least 2 years now.

The second is the engine is a 450 and mine is a 400. Not a huge deal until you consider that the bike is fuel injected and the CDI is major pain in the ass to re-program/flash.

I don't think the cylinder scarring is really going to be an issue, the bad knick is above the rings so... fingers crossed.
