Loud pop, white smoke and burned rubber smell

Happened when starting the bike and it came from under the gas tank area.

Bike started and ran, rode it back to work as I couldn't leave it and have to get home tonight. When stopped at one long light, looked down and on the pavement there appeared to be some gas (on the left side) and oil (on the right side). I wasn't sure if it was there before (it was on military road in SeaTac area so it could have been there already), so looked whenever I was at other lights and didn't see anything. Pants and boots don't smell of gas or oil either.

2009 v-star 1100 customer.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Battery is under the seat on the right side.
No idea if the solenoid is there or the fuse box. The bike did start after that so not sure if that would eliminate the solenoid but it seems to.

Considering that's where your intake and exhaust manifolds are, yes.

True backfires come out the wrong way (backwards), so they fire out the intake. Those things that pop fire out the exhaust pipe aren't really "backfires" because they aren't firing backwards, even though we have a tendency to call them that.

OK. I'll try riding it home and get it into the mechanic, hopefully this weekend, instead of in a couple weeks like I planned.

Thanks folks!

Generally refereed to as "Afterfire".

OK, rode it home with enough fuel for 60+ miles. After 10 miles, I had to switch to the reserve and find a gas station. When I got it home, the gas smell was so strong, it permeated the house.

Not good so I'm caging it until it's solved.

Carbs.

It's in Andrew's capable hands right now. He's found several things that need to be fixed (leaking fork seal, warped rear brake rotor). Sadly he hasn't found the cause yet but I'm confident that he will.
