Is the relay a mechanical or solid state? If you hear a click when it toggles, it's mechanical. Mechanicals wear out a lot faster the solid state relays, but even so, they're generally rated well into the millions of toggles.
It's pretty safe to assume the old relay was damaged when water shorted something out - I'd try to do a better job of waterproofing your connections next time

Honestly, just dialectric the shit out of every electrical connection on the bike. You've got a naked bike and it rains a lot here. Do it now and save yourself a dead bike in a rainstorm later.
