74 years old...crashed...IS OK!!!

MN man's motorcycle's totaled, but gear saved his life

“All the gear, all the time.”

This is a motto that Jim and Jaque Rasmussen live by when riding their motorcycles. And it was Jim’s gear that helped save his life late last month.

It was late in the afternoon on July 29, a Friday, when Jim took off from their home in Miltona and headed down Minnesota 29 on his motorcycle. He was heading to Glenwood, Minn.

The 74-year-old had gone less than two miles, to the intersection of County Road 5, when a vehicle pulled out in front of him. “I hit the front of the car and apparently, I went flying,” Rasmussen said.

When Miltona Fire Department assistant chief and a first responder Kyle Grinager heard his pager go off alerting him to a motorcycle crash, he immediately started thinking about the scene and what he could possibly roll up on.

“I was thinking this was going to be a bad, ugly deal,” Grinager said. “I was expecting to see a mangled, bloody mess.”

However, Grinager was in for a surprise.

The scene was not at all like the images he had pictured in his mind.

“I walked up to him (Rasmussen) lying on the ground and he was talking,” he said. “He was telling us he was OK. There was no blood. I thought, this just isn’t right.”

i want that vest he had. reminds me of the avalanche packs for back country snow skiing. same concept but different results obviously. pull the cord if u get caught in an avalanche and "float" to the top during the slide.

I have one of the Hit-air race vests and used to have one of the standard models (standard models are pretty much the same as Helite). Very well made, I did a test fire on the old one and was really impressed. Good thorax protection and the neck roll braced up against the helmet well enough that it should help prevent neck injuries.

Highly recommend.

I also ride with one of the "Hit-Air" vests by SaferMoto mentioned above. Was expensive, but I could afford it and figured that I'd sure hate to be sitting in a wheelchair after an accident wondering if one of them would have prevented a neck or spine injury.

So far haven't deployed it. Hope to pass it on unused to someone else when I stop riding.

Never heard of that vest but I have one on my AMZ basket now.

Does it impede air venting in hot weather? Most of my Klim jacket vents would still be in the air, but just asking.

Thanks, Greg

It will block a bit of air but not too much as it is open in the front using a couple straps with buckles to fasten in front and no sleeves. I don't think it makes riding in hot weather much worse than it already is if you choose to wear all your gear.

The SaferMoto web site has some photos. There are a few different styles of these things. I got a size large and it fits over a jacket with armor. My model was the MLV-PY or something really similar as that is the one it looks like.

I was looking to see if I can find that Hit Air vest locally to try on first. I cannot.

Yeah. The US supplier is a small volume business. When I got my race vest, I had to get an extender (cuz I'm fat), and it had to be made and sent over from Japan. But if you're gonna do a bulk/group buy, at least they're giving you a little break.

That looks to be the same inflation scheme as their standard vest. Just built into a jacket. Pros: you can still use all the pockets, and it's one less step getting geared up. Cons: can't transfer it between gear sets (mesh/rain/track suit).
