Motorcycle Camera Recommendations

Greetings,

I am tagging this as Technical question post.

I have never had nor have done any research on helmet cam, bike cam, GoPro, etc. products and I am thinking it is about time to get one.

I really do not want to the latest and greatest multi-hundred dollar special, but late model units or great model for the bike recommendation is fine.

1. What is a good sport cam to purchase?

2. Where is a great place to mount?

3. Does the unit come with mounting gear or is this extra purchase for bikes/helmets?

4. Bonus: What units have expandable/swappable memory (SD)?

Thanx

Naza

i plan to build an on board 2 camera security system for bikes with a target price of $250

I have an older Contour HD 1080p. It does 1080p@30fps and 720p@60fps along with some other less interesting formats. It has removable battery which lasts 2-3hrs depending on the mode and takes memory sticks as large as 32gb. I get a little over 2hrs with 720p@60fps. Most cams will come with some basic mounts. I prefer helmet mounting. You can find these older Contours for less than $100. Get yourself 2 spare batteries and you'll be set for all day recording.

I have looked at camera's but they are so dang big and bulky! Waiting for someone to build small one with a micro lense that is small enough it does not look like an arm from the space station... I would rather have a remote battery and storage pack and small camera's.

...is it legal in WA to mount a camera to your helmet?

Contour

The Contour Roam at 720p 60fps mod.:)
I thought I "needed" a GoPro, but these things totally rock!

They are hardly noticeable. I mounted mine opposite my Chatterbox and it creates just enough drag to be balanced.
Unfortunately, I'd rather run it upside down so I can hit the button easier (crossing over LH since its now on throttle side), but I don't have editing software to flip the video...
This thing survived my high side with the very tiniest of marks on it. It is truly tough like they say.
The laser for lining up the horizon is brilliant too!

One thing to note, when setting it up, the camera doesn't sit parallel to the bottom of the helmet (as you might think it would). Surprisingly, the camera sits at probably a 30 angle pointing up. It depends on what bike you ride as to what position your head is in but I was a bit surprised on my SV650. That gets me thinking, it will be shooting to the clouds on my UJM!:p

Following up on what Redkat600 said, I've been stopped about 5 or 6 times with my Contour mounted to my helmet and the cops / troopers never said a word about it.

That is the reason I got the Replay XD 1080 MINI HD Camera. It's small and does really well. 720p @ 60fps and 1080p @ 30fps. Comes with mounts, one for a helmet, one flat and another that is threaded and can mount to any camera mount.

I have a Contour Roam that has almost never worked. Several different memory cards, several downloads, and reboots, still very iffy. Almost every time it says corrupt file. Won't buy again.

Have not used one, but the Mobius ActionCam is pretty tiny. I've seen gimbal mounts for it on ebay, which could make for pretty cool bike mounted videos on twisty roads.

Samsung Galaxy S5, mounted like a dash cam. I got it for free when I signed up with Sprint, and it does just fine for my needs. :D

I believe that 5mm (aka 1/4" or so) is what the Federal law is.

Cameras, bluetooth systems, decorations (fauxhawks, Cookie Monster covers, etc.), almost all of them are not letter of the law legal. Doesn't stop most from using them though, just have to be smart about it. Don't give Mr. LEO a reason to notice you and if they do don't be an ass about things.

Thanx

Great suggestions! I now have some brands/models to check out on Amazon.

Cheers!

I have 2 Gopro and 2 Contour cameras. I got tired of dealing with charging and managing the memory cards. I started looking for a setup that would get power from the bike and recordings that would cycle with the newer recordings overwrighting the older ones. That way it is always recording and I can ignore recordings that I don't need to save, but can copy current recordings that I want.

Anyway, I decided on the Innovv C3. I have 2, one in the front and one in the back. They also have a new one, the K1 which comes with two cameras. If requested I can post up some pictures of the setup on my Goldwing.

Innovv motorcycle camera | motorcycel recordign system | car dashcam
