  KTM 990 Adventure
'08 KTM 990 Adventure trying to kill me

My KTM has been acting up for a few months, getting progressively worse. It's going in for service next week, but I'm trying to get an idea of what might be causing my issues. It's an 08 with 45k miles.

KTM issues:

Revs drop to ~500 RPM when coming to a stop
Idle occasionally just becomes 4-5k for no discernible reason, or it drops to ~1k and starts to die
Fuel light not engaging
When turning, occasionally the bike just dies, or at least won't allow smooth application of throttle to power out of corners
Lots of chugging at low speed, extremely sensitive throttle
Rough power band at lower end of rev range
Oil is making its way into the throttle bodies somehow

Things done to address possible issues:
Clutch cable replaced
Fuel filter replaced
Throttle cables adjusted several times

The clutch cable was an early fix when the problems started showing up, in case people wonder why it's on the repair list.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I would guess coil pack or ECU problem. May also be a bad plugs. Had a very similar issue on an old BMW R100 years ago, and thought carbs or other fueling issue. Bad fuel filter and fouled plugs were the problem.

You may also have valves extremely out of adjustment to have the throttle bodies with regurg oil in them.

I have no personal experience with this model bike, but I'll give it a shot.

Oil in the throttle bodies may be a primary symptom here. It may indicate too much oil in the engine. It may be excess gasoline (leaky fuel injector) leaking past the rings and into the crankcase, diluting the oil and leading to overfull readings.

It may be a kinked or clogged crankcase vent tube (causing excessive pressure buildup in the crankcase; forcing oil out past rings and valve seals).

Maybe you have a dirty or oil-soaked air filter. Bike been on its side recently?

These problems can cause other symptoms, like some you have described.

What do your spark plugs look and smell like; especially if they're pulled right after you shut down from one of these episodes? How's your air filter?

My idea is 45k miles its time for a new bike but as far as your problems go ive had a few similar problems with dying batterys and bad grounds, big twins are know for pukeing oil into the airbox if they are ran hard or over filled with oil or bad rings will create too much cranks case Pressure and force some around.
