1974 Harley-Davidson XLH1000 Sportster rigid hardtail

$10000

This old ironhead sporty has an interesting history. Sometime in the 70's or perhaps early 80's it was the recipient of a Paughco rigid frame. At that time it was painted purple and had one of those seats with the integrated back rest, trick wheels and other bits. It was the kind of thing that was pretty stupid looking for a while but of course now it would be cool as ice lol. This was it:

So there it was. Another purple H-D chopper. Yay. In 1993, a prominent Seattle rock musician was out and about on the town with another fellow Seattle grunge rocker from a different band. They saw this bike for sale in some sort of alcohol haze. Rumor has it one rocker dared the other to buy it and, well, thats what happened. The next day there was sobriety and the requisite "look what I did" conversation. As a result the bike went into storage with extra musical instruments and was not touched until 2005.

In 2005 our rock star decided to hand the bike over to a Seattle area builder by the name of Steve Huff. Steve reworked what was there and made the bike a solid runner. There was no happiness however as the prevailing wisdom was in 2005 that the bike just plain ugly. So there it sat again forlorn and unused in storage at Steve's shop.

A plan was hatched to surprise the rock star for his 40th b-day. Steve completely rebuilt the bike into almost something else entirely more befitting a grunge guy. It was shot in "olive drab" and all sorts of other stuff was done. This is how the bike existed from 2006 to 2014:

The acquisition and rebuild/rework story was the subject of a March, 2007 "Street Chopper" magazine article. I have a hard copy of the 'zine and this online link is still live:

1970 Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster Custom Motorcycle - Rock Star Bike Rehab | Street Chopper

If anyone is still reading... Mr. Musician only rode his birthday gift a time or two. In 2014 he gave it to one of his Seattle area "guys" who is a gifted bike builder himself. This guy completely tore down the bike and went all Oakland Raider chrome/black. Ditched the solid wheels and went with spokes. OE Harley "peunut" tank. The build was done with a minimalist theme.

Nearly every component on this bike is brand new or at least in mint, reworked condition. Since its most recent "completion" its been ridden perhaps 50 miles. It is ridiculously loud and raucous to ride. It retains the factory right hand shift lever and has no horn, no winkers, only one mirror, no instruments, no front fender, no front brake light switch, no rear shocks, etc, etc. The build quality is exceptional and the bike is as clean as the pictures indicate.

Perhaps it goes without saying... but riding something of this nature is not for the faint of heart. Its noisy, stinky, vibey, quirkey, etc. The clutch feels like one of those hand squeezer exercise gizmos only twice as stiff. Don't forget where the rear brake is because you need it.

I liked the purple, the sad thing is I remember reading that article. That bike has been reworked more than ridden and should be great for the right person.

Thats not sad... thats devotion to your craft. Welcome to Club Geek lol.

I rather liked the purple chopper motif as well. When the rear fender wraps around tight like that with the integrated seat. Thats tite yo!

It bizarre to think about Chris Cornell and Sean Kinney walking around after beers and seeing the bike in that form. And then one of them buying it! Only to let it sit basically abandoned in storage on its side in a pool of oil for over a decade.
