What kind of bike should I rent?

I'm going to TN for work in a few weeks and booked a couple extra days to do some riding.

I found a small company that rents bikes, will pick up and deliver, can receive shipped gear, and will even hook you up with local riders for free if you want a guide

So...what kind of bike should I rent? I spoke to the owner, and the list on his website is current, except that he no longer has the 125 and may be getting a FZ07.

Suggestions welcome from the peanut gallery!

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those. Shame the Z125 isn't available. That would of been my personal choice. To quote the FijiMan: "Sometimes it's just so much fun to ride a slow bike, fast".

Regardless, it's a perfect time to let one's curiosity get the better of them. Careful though, you just might make a new best friend that follows you home to your garage.

I have no input on what to rent but if you have days at your disposal you MUST go ride Deals Gap aka The Tail of the Dragon.

Street Triple R! You'll want quick direction changes and some power. The passing zones are pretty short. You don't want to be stuck behind a daytripper in a clapped-out minivan due to lack of power as you roll up to a twisty zone.

Additional to the Tail of the Dragon, you definitely want to do the Cherohala Skyway. When I lived in Atlanta, that was one of my favorite longer rides.

Further south into Georgia, most of the roads heading north into the Appalachians from Dahlonega were very good, too. Those are reachable from the Dragon.

The pass over Blood Mountain was awesome, too. Have a groovy time!

After reviewing the available bikes, I'd say the FZ-07. Especially since you had mentioned one as a possible replacement for the F800.

Where are you going to be based out of? Did a 3 day ride out of Franklin just south of Nashville. Did the northern portion of the Natchez Trace, was nice. Went to Memphis, surreal, then rode the backroads back eastward through Mississippi and Alabama. People were friendly. Civil war Interpretive center in Corinth, Miss. was sobering. So much to see, just get a nice comfy/sporty ride and enjoy!

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! So far, it seems like the votes fall in 3 camps:

1) Small bikes rock! Which I agree, and if a small bike were available, that would likely be my choice.

2) A similar bike to what I own - for comfort and familiarity.

3) Street triple - as well suited to the roads.

And thanks for the recommendations of roads. I'll be close to Knoxville for this part of the trip. Yes, the Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway are on the list. Unfortunately, I'll only have a day and a half for riding. As PJ told me, it's not going to be enough, but at least I'll get a taste and can decide if I want to come back another time for a dedicated riding trip.

We used to have a PJ in the area who was a Submarine Engineer. Have you talked to him?
I think the Monsters would be fun! I know that people who have them really like the street triples too. I agree with your summation.

And I've booked a 2010 Street Triple. Wish me luck!

(I checked out the ergonomics on that cycle ergonomics site, and it looks like the triple will fit me almost exactly the same as my BMW. Plus, I've always been curious about them. So what the heck, I'll give it a shot!
