A Warning: Ferry Terminal Speeds

Got pulled over IN the Southworth terminal this morning for going too fast past the cars in line. The officer was cool and just gave me a warning. Said they got complaints everyday last week. Seems to be an issue with the early morning crowd since he said they had to adjust their schedules to be here for us this morning.

He asked that I spread the word.

Thereís also the typical speed trap on Sedgwick this morning. Be safe out there.

Well, itís a downhill run and the speed limit is 10mph. Iím sure itís not as bad as the people calling 911 are making it out to be. He said he clocked me at 25, which I canít say isnít possible, but that would have been in the section of empty lot at the back as I was engine braking in first gear by the time I was passing the cars.

Didnít sound like he wanted to be there and realizes a lot of it is ďperceivedĒ speeding and people resenting motorcycles for always making the ferry.

Well, for all of us locals who live on the route to and from the boat all of you bracket racing ferry commuters are a PITA.

BTW: Do you know the guy with the 12th Man wrap on the Cushman?

Many years ago WSP had an occasional speed trap at the Seattle Terminal, (they actually wrote tickets). They also stood on the ferry watching vehicle loading. Riders who had taken their helmets off prior to loading and didn't put them back on also were issued tickets.

Hwy 305 traffic on Bainbridge during commute hours is pretty bad. There are a couple of "back road" workarounds so that much of 305 can be avoided. Speed limits on those roads are 25 or 35 mph. Of course the commuters go as fast as they can and residents complained. BIPD has occasional speed traps on the roads.

On an early morning walk I came across a speed trap and chatted up the officer. He said their policy is to issue a warning for the first offense, up to about 20 over. He also said that he's issued three tickets for doing 60 in a 25. No warning given to those drivers.

I know it's an assumption, but I bet that anyone piloting a 12 Man wrapped Cushman has the potential to be "interesting."

Yeow. Considering that half the island is a school zone that's pretty scary. I pretty much stick with the limit on the back roads.

That said, speeding is not the worst problem on the island anymore and certainly not in the ferry lot. It's late night extremely shitfaced drivers weaving down 305 at 40 mph every time I'm out there at that hour. It's amazing when some of them make it all the way off the island.

I mean... I know it's Seattle and hipster and all, but I rode past a guy on some type of tiny, effeminate scooter going over the West Seattle Bridge. When I first saw from a ways away, I literally said out loud in my helmet: "What the fuck is that?"

I'm definitely no hipster. And they seem to be coming out of hibernation... On the ferry this morning, there was a guy with a beard, some weird type of hat, a long sleeve shirt, a vest, and a an old-timey, hard metal lunch pail... I was actually a little impressed. Embarrassed for him, but impressed.

And I work with a guy that rides a Vino. But I think he rides it more out of irony which is much more justifiable; at least in my biased mind. He's also got an entire warehouse of project scooters/motorcycles/other-things-with-motors that I would die to have.

And update to the ferry speed/traffic situation: Word definitely seems to have spread. Everyone is rolling to and from the ferry much slower. Although I'm a little annoyed at the double standard of motorcycles having to feather the clutch while teetering down the lane at 10mph while the guys on bicycles fly down to the end at 20+ mph and no one bats an eye.

The only difference I see is that the bicycles aren't big and scary and loud.

But don't get me wrong; I don't care if bicycles or motorcycles or cars are going 20mph when it's safe to do so. 10mph is an asinine and arbitrary speed limit. The cars leaving the ferry are never doing 10mph, but the people on motorcycles that are (generally) far more alert and aware of their surroundings need to practically walk their rides down to the end.

Case in point: it's DRIVERS complaining about motorcycle speeds in the terminal, not the terminal workers that are standing right next to the lanes we are riding down. You'd think they would be the first to complain about unsafe speeds.
