Thanks for the ride guys. One hour ferry wait? Not for me lol.
So my oil light came on again. I put her on the center stand on FLAT ground this time. And she is in fact below the minimum level. She got an oil change when I bought her about 3000 miles ago. Should I be worried about using that much oil?

I'm starting to feel like I overspent on a bike that needs valve seals. Fml

There are different amounts of oil stated when changing oil, or oil A AND filter. Make sure you put in the req'd amount. Valve seal wear can show itself be smoke from the exhaust on deceleration as o]posed to piston ring wear smoking on acceleration. I didn't see or smell any oil while I was riding behind you yesterday.
I wouldn't give up on your bike yet.
How many miles are on it?

I'd say - probably not. Seems to run well enough. Level it out and fill it to the middle of the window and watch what happens. Maybe, probably it was under-filled at the change. Top it off and ride a couple hundred miles and check it. No sense worrying until you have data.

I cleaned up my bike a little when I got home. The lower fairing looked like it had been used to plow a field of pine needles and squirrel fur. Yech. It was...interesting...hauling-ass across that layer of leaves and water. Sketchy, a bit. I didn't realize until l got home that I had been sort of tensed up all day. Yeeks.

Nice ride though.

It has just about 28,000. 3 of which are from me.
I ran lucas wet clutch formula synthetic blend in my other bike. I'm thinking about doing a change with that. Or maybe full synthetic. And see what happens. Thanks for putting my mind at ease tho
I need to start poking around and getting to know the bike mechanically. I've been so busy putting putting 3k on it in 6 weeks that I haven't really had time to dig into her and get everything adjusted to my liking.

What do you run in your bike? Yama lube or something else?

My summer oil has been Valvoline Racing oil 20w50 for a long time. When synthetics first came out, they didn't work well with wet clutches and caused oil leaks through seals like you wouldn't believe! I wasn't sold. They have improved greatly since then. For the last 50,000 miles on my FZR I ran Castrol GTX High mileage synthetic blend. I just put Royal Purple 10w30 in it with the '94 motor. When I looked up the oil requirement online ifor your FZ1 t called for 20w40. That's probably the summer weight. I am hesitant to run the very light weight synthetics in a motor as old as mine as the internal clearances weren't designed for it. Yours being newer they might work, but again note the Manufacturer recommended weight! Oh yeah, and 3.2 quarts with a filter change for you.

The I know the dealership put 10-30 which seems light to me. Yamaha only recommends that weight for below 60 degrees. I think I'm going to try the Lucas wet clutch formula 20-50 weight and see how that does.

Is the mobile 1 racing a motorcycle specific oil?

Do you mean Valvoline? I have never run Mobile 1. The "racing" designation really means it has better anti foaming characteristics. Some say it isnt good for long term or "normal" use. I have never had any issues.

Yah valvoline sorry. I also subscribe to an fz1 forum and they were all touting mobile 1.
Valvoline does make a oil marketed as motorcycle oil O'Reilly has it on their website.
And I can't find 20w 40 any where local. It's 10 40 or 20 50. I guess I could wait till tomorrow and call my local shop.

I'm thinking I'm going to pick up the lucas 20 50 and a K&N oil filter and go from there. If it feels to thick I'll try 10 40

I ended up with lucks semi synthetic 10w 40. Since we're coming into the cold season and temperatures will be below 60 degrees. But I'll have that extra ten weight for the warmer days.
And I think I'll run full synthetic 20 50 in the summer monthz

Or run Rotella T6 all the time.
