Rally In The Gorge/Sportbike Northwest

Hello all my Kitsap riders. It's that time of year once again for me to announce the rapidly approaching annual, Rally In The Gorge, Sportbike Northwest event.

Most who know me have heard me talk about this event. Personally, I look forward to attending every year. I've met some great friends through this rally, and IMO the surrounding area's around the Gorge are some of the finest roads WA and Or have to offer motorcyclist. Not to mention the always fun to visit Hood River, Or. has some outstanding food establishments.

If spending 4 days hanging out with like minded people, riding some of the finest roads in this region, consuming great food and drink, and taking in breath taking scenery sounds like your thing. Then join me and my usual group of moto hooligans and come enjoy The Gorge the way it was meant to be, on two!

I hope to see some new faces this year! If your interested feel free to contact me about travel and arrangements.

I've attended this event the last 3 years. I'm surprised we have never met since there are so few sportbike riders there. Have you attended any of the Maryhill Loops Road Clinics that Mike Sullivan puts on during the rally? Maybe we've ridden together and not even know it

I've attended the Rally the past 6 years. If you watch the video, my CBR is shown at the 1:56 time stamp. I've never took the Marry hill cornering clinic, but have rode the hill all but last year. From what I've heard the cornering clinic is a pretty basic clinic, tailored to more of a beginner rider. What were your thought's of it?

I usually get a room with a group of guys so I'm not at the camp grounds much, probably why we've not bumped into each other. This year I will be camping it, most likely so I'll be bouncing around the camp grounds. If you go this year come find me. I'll have my red CBR 1000rr and candy orange and black ZX14 you can't miss either of them.

Yeah, it's pretty basic. I usually will help a rider or two who may be struggling the riding sessions. I like the clinic mainly because it's limited to 20 bikes and you get the entire road (both lanes up and down) for 3 hours. Is it worth the extra money??? I think so.

I'll be camping again this year, so I'll come find you.

BTW... Is your avatar photo from the ride-out to ORP during the parade laps we did out there???

As long as the bike has insurance and you've registered for the Rally you can ride it on Marry Hill.

How you get it there though is an entirely different story as Marry Hill is about a 45 min to an hour ride from the camp grounds in Hood River and that's if you slab it.

Often we roll out after breakfast and take the scenic route and make it to Marry Hill around 1 pm.

I suppose you could trailer it, but It's really not that serious of a run. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome road to ride, if you've not yet done it. I look forward to doing it every year.

The flow of the road is very nice, especially the climb up. There is some technicality to it with some blind entries, off camber turns, decreasing radius turns and even a blind descending-decreasing radius.

When the road is open to general Rally Public it is maned by personnel, a start guy at both the top and bottom. They manage 2-way traffic up/down the hill, just like on any normal two way street.
They send riders one at a time in 30-45 second intervals. You can run up/down with a chase guy if you like, but it's frowned upon if you cross the center line. They have look outs watching specifically for intentional over lane usage. Believe me I know.

My 3rd time at the Rally I was warned if I didn't stop crossing the center line and stay in my lane then they were going to ask me to leave the hill. Needless to say I complied.

You can sign up for the 3 hour cornering clinic for an additional $109.00. This clinic is limited to 20 riders and entails proper cornering instruction, pretty basic from what I understand. Though you do then get to ride the Hill using the whole road, which allows for proper set up of some of the more technical turns.
