Talking Potential Chinook Pass Ride

Well, campers, it's that time of year. The masters of the nuclear grade snow blowers have got Chinook Pass, Hwy 123, and the Stevens Canyon Road opened up. I have a tradition of getting up to the pass as soon as possible after opening day, if for no other reason than I like to have pictures of the bike next to 10 foot snow banks.

It looks like there is a window of opportunity open on Thursday the 30th, and I already have my liberty card punched.

The details:

Departure: KSU at the Safeway fuel station @ 08:30 (with full tanks, because the next fuel stop will be in 100 miles.

Pace: Not a cruiser parade, but definitely not a race. There may be critters, potholes, running water across the road, etc., so we will be behaving. If that doesn't work for you stay home or bring your climbing gear and 60 metre rope, because if you act like an asshat around me I will do my level best to take your bike keys and toss them over the side.

Tolls: If you don't have a National Park pass (I have my lifetime senior pass) it will cost you $25 to get into the park to ride the Stevens Pass road.

Timing: No, I will not move this to a weekend. Way too many tourists cluttering up the path of travel.

The route: Bing Maps Reference

If you wanna come play nicely and see some stunning terrain feel free to come along.

Well, shit. Would love to make it but I have acquired gainful employment and itll probably be frowned upon if I take 3 days off in the span of a week for motorcycle stuff...

Woot! Have a good one.
Let the stair riders know when Skate Creek opens up.

I'll be picking which kites to take to Ocean Shores for the weekend.
Going to fly a few in memory of Heidi. Probably crash a few others though.

It's hard to believe that the little fuzzball has been gone for 9 years.

Remember, don't tug hard on the string if the spine is pointed down.

According to the Gifford Pinchot N.F. website, Skate Creek Rd should be currently open.

04/25/19: Skate Creek Rd will be opening for the Summer/Fall season on April 26. Call the Cowlitz Valley Ranger District for updates.
Would definitely love to make this ride, but don't know yet whether the situation will permit.

I had a volunteer shift at Paradise today and decided to take the "back" route to get there -- 410 to Cayuse Pass and Stevens Canyon road. That's a nice ride. There appears to be less snow up there now than last year at this time. The really rough section of 410 between the Sunrise Road and Cayuse Pass has been repaired. The frost heaves north of the 123/Stevens Canyon intersection are as bad as ever, however. Stevens Canyon road was cleaner than I expected and the pavement is still in pretty good shape after the work done a few years ago. A law enforcement ranger was also kind enough to give me a gentle "slow down" warning via a brief flash of the red-and-blues as we met instead of turning around for a chat. I took that advice and generally followed the rules for the rest of the ride to Paradise.

Dear Mr. FeralRdr's Demonic Overlord Taskmaster,

Please excuse Feral's absence, as he has come down with a bad case of Bubonic Plague, Ebola, Legionnaires Disease, Yellow Fever, and Gingivitus.

His Doctor has prescribed plenty of rest and isolation.

Nothing more restful to a soul than riding over Chinoonk Pass, and I'm thinking that wearing a helmet and good riding gear is very isolating.

Seriously, I should know NLT Wednesday morning if I'll be able to make it. Will commit as soon as I know.

Hey Tex,

The map in your OP is currently a little wonky due to GMaps not wanting to route through Mt. Rainier. Is your current plan to go to the top of Chinook Pass, then back track to SR123, then down to Stevens Canyon Rd and through the Park to eventually the LaGrande Area?

GMap (currently routes via Packwood/Skate Creek Rd, as GMAP won't route via Stevens Canyon Rd (via Stevens Canyon should be less miles)).

Or were you thinking of continuing down 410 to 12, and back over White Pass?

GMap

There's been no further word on the Wood Shed's full reopening yet (nor more importantly, the return of their Cinnamon Rolls), so there may not be an additional incentive to go east, other than the fact, it can still be a good ride (assuming we wouldn't get stuck behind slow traffic on HWY 12 )

Not trying to instigate, just want to clarify your plan. Either route would be a good ride.
