Chinook Pass Ride

Well, campers, it's that time of year. The masters of the nuclear grade snow blowers have got Chinook Pass and Hwy 123 opened up. I have a tradition of getting up to the pass as soon as possible after opening day, if for no other reason than I like to have pictures of the bike next to 10 foot snow banks.

It looks like there is a window of opportunity open on Thursday the 18th, and I already have my liberty card punched.

The details:

Departure: KSU at the Safeway fuel station @ 08:30 (with full tanks, because the next fuel stop will be in 100 miles.

Pace: Not a cruiser parade, but definitely not a race. There may be critters, potholes, running water across the road, etc., so we will be behaving. If that doesn't work for you stay home or bring your climbing gear and 60 metre rope, because if you act like an asshat around me I will do my level best to take your bike keys and toss them over the side.

Probably hit Whistling Jack's for lunch and routing decisions.

The route:

If the weather caves in I will reschedule, but I ain't doing a weekend.

Another year missed. I'll be making preps for a run to SD to get my new (to me) bike. You crazy kids have fun.

Texas, I made a previous arrangement to meet up with another rider in Enumclaw a little later in the morning Thursday for the ride over the pass. If you linger over lunch we may catch you at Whistlin’ Jacks. I’m confident you won’t get the troopers on the east side too agitated so they’re inclined to take it out on us when we come along later.

Wish I could make it, but can't for a variety of reasons. Next year.

Since I'm doing the shake down run on a new bike I won't be scorching the asphalt.

Traffic in Tacoma sux. Late arriving, as opposed to 20 minutes early, and nobody is here. Either they got wound up in traffic too or they gave the old man up for lost and ghosted with no messages.

Oh well, I've been ditched before.

They didn't work too hard at ditching the old guy, because I headed them off at the pass.

It was a good run. 2 miles short of 300, for me. Got the chain lubed and adjusted, and did some other minor service on the bike. Ready to ride again. OK, maybe not 'till tomorrow.

Including the trip up and back, it was a 526 Mile trip for me.

168 yesterday, and 358 today.

FS-25 is definitely now open. The road is still very rideable; but most of the damage from previous years is still there, and what was good is getting bumpier. I didn't notice any major new damage, but there has been a lot of logging off of 25 in near both the northern and southern ends.

It was good chasing front tyres with you again. Do I need to check your work on 25

First there were three.

Then there were four.

Northern clear cut (FS-25)

It was definitely a great day, and fun ride. As for checking my work, I think the community could always use a second opinion.

Oh, and lest we forget. Whistlin' Jacks was closed when we arrived, so we went down the road to the Golden Creek Saloon, and guess what?

Yeah, they were closed too. So, once more back onto the road for the search for food. On the third try we found the restaurant open at Squaw Rock RV campground. There isn't any dining in, but you can order at the cash register, and eat outside at any of the picnic tables. They weren't very busy, so we had our pick of the back deck. Also, the lady who baked the Cinnamon Rolls at the Woodshed in Nile, now runs the restaurant at Squaw Rock, and she told us she always has Cinnamon Rolls available.
