Question From Prineville to Maupin on One Tank of Gas??

So I'm not sure where to put this since we don't really have a Central Oregon subforum so I'd figure I'd ask here.

I'm planning a 4 day trip loop from Beaverton to near the Cali border to back home. The 4th day will be one of the longer days we ride and I had a question about gas.

We start in Bend and head toward Prineville, Fossil and Maupin. Now I've done a different route out here and getting to gas in Maupin from Biggs Junction, Condon, Fossil to Maupin was a little iffy. I was running on fumes...

I ride an '07 gsxr 600 (4.3 gal tank) but my husband rides an '08 gsxr 1000 (4.8 gal tank). He's worried he won't be able to make the 166 miles from Prineville to Maupin. I told him the speed limit was high out there and that you'd be surprised how far you can go on a tank.

What do you guys think?

I'm adding just the portion of the route we'll be taking to get from Prineville to Maupin.

He needs to forget about gears 1-5 for that part of the trip. My N1k can go 225 miles if I keep it in the higher gears while out in that part of the state.
Edit: But I typically only get 160-170 with "normal" riding - which sounds similar to his.

If you get to a nice section of twisties, yeah drop into lower gears. But as soon as the road straightens out at all, back up to 6th.

Mitchell seems to have a gas station, but they are closed two days a week...hopefully not the days you are traveling through.

Other option is to get couple of little gas cans, or something to transport some extra in for this leg of the journey.

Just for an apples-to-apples comparison, my 01 R1 (as opposed to my monster or ST4s) allegedly has a 4.7 (ish) gallon tank, and I don't even worry until I get past 160 miles in regard to finding fuel. in moderate riding, the low fuel light doesn't come on until about 170 miles, and that's with about one gallon left in reserve. Whenever I have calculated my fuel mileage, it has always been around 55 miles per gallon. I wouldn't think twice about that distance

I'd call the guy in Mitchell and see if he'll be open when you're planning on going through there.

Address: 101 Main St, Mitchell, OR 97750
Phone: (541) 462-3103
Hours: Open today 7:30AM–7:30PM

Or, if you have time, go from Mitchell to Kimberly. There's gas in Kimberly and the canyon between there and Mitchell is definitely worth the ride. It's just plain gorgeous. You should also stop at the Painted Hills just outside of Mitchell.

There is regular gas in Spray and Fossil. There is Premium gas in Dayville. Fossil gas is closed Sunday.
I don't recall if any of these are available after normal business hours.

My '05 GSXR1000, 4.5 gal tank, could go that 166 mile distance,
but I'd be sweating the fuel numbers too. He'll make it; have fun..

Oops. There is no gas or town in Kimberly, Oregon.
Kimberly is an intersection with one building.

Get gas in Fossil if it's open and then in Mitchell. Basically the key to traveling through Central Oregon is getting gas when you see a gas station - often they close early in the day. But like uhoh said - I wouldn't sweat it too much. I carry a plastic tube with me in case I ever run out of gas. I also have one of these:

I have yet to use either.

Edit: Maupin has non-ethanol gas but it's in the big red tank on the side - that's what you want! The gas station in Shaniko is still closed.

55 mpg on a litre Sportbike? I get no better than 45. And some of those roads are tight and twisty and it will probably be impossible to be in 6th gear, and why would you do that on those nice roads?

Also, the faster you go, the more gas you consume.

I get at most 170 on fumes with my R1. And I get nervous once I get near 160.

None of my liter bikes past or present can do more then 140 miles on a tank...

Strap a 1 gallon tank or something to both bikes tails so you don't have to worry about it . Would rather focus on the road then my current fuel situation, but that's just me.

Supersport vs "sport touring".
I get the same torque at 4500 RPM that you get at 9500. No point for me to be that high up unless I'm literally racing.

In 6th gear @ 70 mph, I'm getting pretty much optimal MPG. At 80, i'm only getting slightly less.

Thank you all for your input! I know I would make it, barely, but my husband is more worried. I think I'll take a canister similar to what Lena suggested just to be on the safe side. Going 80-90 mph is easy out there in the straights and I didn't see a fuel mileage decrease on my 600.

Our bikes don't take regular gas otherwise, yes, we'd be getting gas in Mitchell or Fossil but I know for a fact that Maupin has non-ethanol gas and that is the place to be!

Actually, they do have gas there. I filled up the last time I went through there. The building is a post office, store and gas station.

Unfortunately Kimberly is a little too far out. We'll be riding 350 miles that day. I think it would be too much for my husband. We may alter the route when we get to the 4th day but I don't want to burn him out. I've done 400+ miles in a single day but he has never done more that 200. It'll be a challenge for him for sure but if I want him to continue to do more trips like this with me so I've got to ease him into it lol.

Wow, that's sad! I've also got a 600 like you and can usually go 140 miles before the light starts to blink. And that's in town. Out in the sticks I can go a whole lot longer before the light kicks on.

You must ride in the higher RPMs?
