Northern Central Oregon Fires?

Hey all! I'm planning to do a day trip out to Fossil and back in August and was wondering if there are any current fires that are keeping roads closed out that way? I'd like to keep an eye on them in case I have to change my route the closer it gets to go-time.

Pic of route I'll be taking:

you might want to consider riding hwy.14 in Washington rather than 84 in Oregon...if you're riding counter clockwise and dropping down into Bigg's Junction be prepared really really windy conditions...I know of a bagger than was pushed off of the road by the wind...have a great ride...oh Fossil in August? hot hot hot hot hot..lol

  S1000rr and a few others!
There was a coupe around John Day but not sure of the status.

You can check this site to see where the larger ones are. Sometimes it's slow to update and there may be a better reference site but I don't know any others.

Good luck!!!!

Ya I've ridden this route before and in August no less. It's going clockwise which is why we're staying in Oregon on 84.

Ashfoot ~ I'd recheck a little closer to your ride date. Seems we're having fires every other week

I just got back from a condon fossil spray ride and i saw no smoke or evidence of fire, that said it was 105*on the way over and the prineville hotshots were camping at the spray campground.

Check the day before. It is your best bet. We are doing a ride there tomorrow with a group. Leaving Redmond, OR at 7:15 then topping up in Madras at 8:00.

Remember there is only regular gas in Fossil so bring octane boost or be prepared to pay the gas station price. Sometimes they sell out, FYI.

We are able to make it from Biggs Junction to Maupin on a single tank. So gas isn't an issue and Maupin has non-ethanol

Hey Ash, When did you last get Non-Ethanol in Maupin? Last year, Oldmanriver and I stopped in at Richmond's Gas station, and they said for the time being they were no longer carrying it, due to their above ground fuel tank not being to code. When we rode through back in late June, there was still no above ground fuel tank, and pumps were diesel and regular.

As such, we've been topping off in Tygh Valley.

May have to postpone this trip. Both of our bikes don't do well on regular and who wants to bring octane booster on a ride?

Sorry for the late reply Ash.

Yep that tank is gone. Apparently if they had been outside the city limits, there wouldn't have been a problem. Unfortunately, if the station is in city limits, they need a different type of above ground tank. Being as how that was gonna cost them over $10,000 to purchase, they said it was gonna be awhile (if ever) until they got one.

If I might ask, what sort of fuel range are you limited to? Further what sort of time/total daily mileage limit do you have; and what route were you thinking?

Well after just coming back from a ride out to Klickitat I've found that my tank currently has 180 miles on it, solid gas light so not sure how many more miles I can go (haven't gotten gas yet, I'm changing out the fuel filter and didn't want a full tank to deal with). Anywho, my husband's bike hit 160 miles before he had to get gas after his solid gas light came on but he's riding a liter bike. So really we are limited to how far he can go.

The route is shown in a pic above. We'd come from Biggs Junction towards Condon, Fossil, Antelope, Shaniko Maupin, Tygh Valley to Barlow Road and home.

Most likely we'll just hit up 224 to Breitenbush, you know, the Detroit Lake Loop, as an alternate "safe" ride.

Sorry Ash, I missed the pic posted above, or I would have already mentioned this. You should both be just fine if you top off in Condon, and Tygh Valley. Both have Ethanol Free Premium available, and it's only about 105 miles between, as your pict routes you.

A thought; have you considered taking Bake Oven Rd. It would save you some time, and is a lot more interesting (more curvy) than taking 97 to 197.

Oh wow, I never knew there was non-ethanol premium in Condon or Typh Valley! Good to know thanks!

Looked at Bake Oven. Don't have my Butler map in front of me though, any obstacles/gravel on that road?

I've always loved coming into Maupin on the switch backs, I'll miss those :'(
