Adventure travel on CBR

Sorry if this post is double...
Did some adventure riding yesterday... The Ochoco mts in North Central Oregon. 30-40 miles of unpaved, out through Ashwood east of Hwy 97 and on to near Antelope, where we had to go on to Fossil, of course. The CBR 600s make pretty good dual sport bikes, and on 218, they do good. Fun ride, lots of empty country, even on labor day weekend

What tires are you running? Did you use just street or swap out for something more burly? I couldnt load pics on my phone to look for myself.

Q3 Dunlop. One now has a Dunlop Roadsmart rear now, and it stuck on the Fossil road at a pace that left NO chicken strips. The cbrs weight is around 340lbs, with a low center of gravity and a low saddle height..Easy to ride in the dirt.

Hello Gnarly!

"On Q3's?!...Geez, he''s got balls as big as church bells!"

LOL, I've seen that road on the map; thanks for scouting it out. Next time you want to something flat-out crazy like that, count me in!

You can put D616 adventure bike tires on a CBR600RR, I did it. It works OK, but they lack the street grip of normal sport tires.

Nothing too crazy about riding primarily street bikes through some back country dirt and gravel.
The CBR 600s are certainly easier to manage in the Outback than the "Sport Touring" Honda VFR I had there for a little while..
We stopped just outside Condon to help a gentleman hoist his BMW Adventure bike back upright, too...Big, tall and heavy..they're all good though...

Hi Gnarly!

Oh, the ride is great, the "crazy" happens later:

A few years back, a group of ordinarily sensible sport bikers decided to ride up Red Hill Road and over Lolo Pass on Mt. Hood. About seven miles of deep gravel was between us and a pizza in Zig Zag. What a day!

An R1, a Busa, and SV1000S and SV650S 'Zooks. Spraying gravel everywhere, floating from rut to rut; had a blast. Got to the pavement on top to meet two gentlemen on GS Beemers who.looked like they just stepped out of the Aerostich catalog. "How's that road?" they asked. "Oh, not too bad..." we modestly said. The two gents looked at us, looked at our bikes, thanked us for the info, and turned back down the pavement. We gotta chuckle out of that. Pizza was pretty good too.

The "crazy" happened in my garage a few days later. It looked like the bottom of my engine had been professionally shot-peened! All the paint was gone from my belly pan, the exhaust was peened, and even the shock mount was dimpled. How those Q2's threw that much gravel is beyond me, but I subsequently learned all about Colorite magic.

Upon reflection, I think that was the moment I decided to get an ADV bike....

Back at The Dawn of Time, there were no ADV bikes, no sportbikes, just "bikes". You rode what you had anywhere you wanted. We hadn't splintered into sub genre factions yet. Hell, my old BSA was an "adventure bike"; just getting it started was an adventure. Come to think of it, getting it stopped was sometimes adventurous too. Who remembers the "clean your points with a matchbook" trick? Good times on the side of the road....

Here's to riding to the out-of-the-way places!

I was poking fun at the claim that a bike with a stunt cage has not been crashed...
