Klickitat, Glenwood, BZ Corner, Bingen

Since it didn't rain today, I thought it would be nice to put in a few miles. The ride is known as the Glenwood loop to some folks.

The ride was a little on the cool side; at the higher elevations it felt like low 40's. The sun was out for a little bit of the ride, nice while it lasted. As usual this time of year, even on a dry day, the roads were mainly wet since a lot of the route is shaded by trees. What really made it "interesting" was the gravel in the corners throughout Sheep Canyon (the best twisty section between SR142 and Glenwood) and on the road going down to BZ Corners. The gravel used around here is really skillfully disguised brown ball bearings. The stuff is actually round! Wet roads, with gravel, put a damper on spirited riding. But, that's to be expected this time of year.

I knew that there was no gravel on SR142 from Lyle to Klickitat, so that was a good opportunity to wick it up a bit. Fun.

No law enforcement types were seen through the entire 93 mile ride. Saw ONE other guy on a motorcycle, an Indian, I think.

I'm hoping to get in a few more rides before the snow/ice/salt/frigid temps set in. One thing came to mind when I was feeling the chill, it's a little nicer to ride when it's hot than when it's cold. Yep.

When does it warm up???

Thanks for sharing Rocky.

Was wishing I could have gotten out today when I saw the sun, and the roads over here started drying out. :(

By any chance, do you know the current conditions of Canyon Rd and the Klick-Appleton HWY?

Haven't ridden Canyon Rd. or Klickitat-Appleton Rd. in a few weeks, although I can see the latter from my house. I'll try to check it out as soon as the rain stops. It's certain that they will gravel the snot out of most of it soon. The steep downhill on Klickitat-Appleton ending at SR142 is no fun when they've freshly graveled it.

The higher elevations are beginning to get the annual liberal application of gravel, making them tedious to ride, as well as hazardous.

Hey Feral, I did the Canyon Rd./Klickitat-Appleton Rd. reconnaissance today: DON"T GO!!

I went up Canyon Rd. and everything was peachy until I got to the sharp hairpin turn about midway up. Gravel. It was great up until that point, but both Canyon Rd. and Klickitat-Appleton Rd. are both heavily graveled beyond the hairpin. Coincidentally, the road was wet for most of the graveled parts.

What made it interesting was the freezing temps up on top and the 100' max visibility, due to fog, for about 1/2 of Klickitat-Appleton. Fog: check. Gravel: check. Freezing: check. Fogged up shield: check. All the ingredients for a dream ride, LOL. I had to raise the shield to see where I was going, but only doing 20 to 30mph because of the lack of traction and visibility. Even with grip heaters, my fingers were really cold. Toes, too.

So, mark this route off your list until further notice, unless you want to have an adventure and a story to tell.

I actually did have fun. The ride started in Klickitat, then to Lyle, Murdock, through Dallesport, to 197, to SR14, to Canyon Rd., back to Klickitat. It was about 54 miles or so. It was good to get out and run the old SV, which rolled over 56K miles while out today.

From here on, till spring, I'm going to try and ride the lower elevations, preferably on roads with no gravel.

Thanks for the Road Report Rocky; way to take one for the team. I was hoping to ride this past week myself, but had to replace a busted printer. I was thinking of heading east next week if the current weather forecast holds. However, it looks like the higher elevations are not a good idea till spring. :(

One more thing, about the fogged up shield. When I got home, I treated the shield to prevent fogging. In case someone out there hasn't heard of this trick, here it is:

Put 2 drops of dish washing liquid on the inside of the shield. Rub it progressively outward till you have a thin coat over all the area you need to see through. Gently buff it out with a microfiber cloth, until the haze is gone.

The dish washing liquid treatment works great, and it's cheap!
