08_23_16 Ride to Fossil
It was a great day to ride to Fossil. Not too hot, clear skies, very little traffic; all the ingredients for a fun day. The route was Klickitat, The Dalles, (8 mile road to the east), Dufur Gap Road, Shearer's Bridge, Kent, Shaniko, Antelope, Fossil. Return by Bake Oven Road, Maupin etc.
The day started out a little brisk in crime free Klickitat, but warmed up quite a bit around Antelope. The ride began with my heated vest turned on and the ride ended with a mesh jacket and helmet vents open. It was 38* warmer at the end than at the beginning of the ride.
Didn't see a single law enforcement officer, the deer stayed off the road (although I saw a couple), gravel in a few corners, but in the usual places. Didn't see another motorcycle in Fossil, so I had to terrorize the town all by myself! There had been a small wildfire about 8 miles outside of Fossil; it was still smoldering as I rode by, but appears to be out, I hope.
There was some lovely scenery at the John Day Clarno unit rest stop... Too bad Quixote and the rest of the BOS missed out.
The Fossil ride is about 44 miles longer than the ride to Windy Ridge (that I did on the 10th of this month), but the two rides are so completely different, you would think that they were in two different countries! We are SPOILED with great places to ride here in the PNW!
The ride was a nice 288 miles and took just a bit over 6 hours. I was glad to roll into Chez Rock Dodger, but sorry the ride had to end, kinda.
