your wildlife encounters while riding...

had an encounter yesterday that got me thinking, how many have had to close of encounters, aka hitting critter or way to close for the liking?

my encounter yesterday was coming back up hwy 9 just a bit north of Acme, had a good size hawk just miss me. pretty sure he was focused on something on other side of road and I happened to be in his way.

the weirdest was when I was living in Dallas,Or. and was going down Kings Hwy just south of town. I came around a corner just as a Coyote came down a bank. he then ran along side me for a couple hundred yards....was on the RC390 at time and the thing was almost as big as my surreal.

so what encounters have you had?

Took a robin to the face at about 60mph. Checked the mirror just in time to watch my buddy run over the stunned/dead bird and turn it into an explosion of feathers.

Had another friend blast a grouse at around 70mph mid corner as it jumped up out of the ditch. Turned the bird inside out and made a mess of feathers for me to ride through. Broke his turn signal clean off.

Just last week. Going 70 mph north on 3 when an owl swooped in from the left. I ducked but not quick enough and it hit the top of my helmet. Had to pull over and collect myself.

Bird (Sparrow) to the chest doing about 50, a Forest Rat almost took me out a few years back, and a Bremelo not paying attention thinking the entire road is 1 big crosswalk.

I hit a young moose following its mother while crossing the Al-Can highway a few years ago with my F800GS. Got slowed down from 60 to about 15 mph, and hit it in the hindquarters, which was taller than the windscreen! A buddy following me told me a little while later than he thought he had a front row seat to my demise.

I kept the bike upright (amazingly - still don't know how). The moose took the impact, side-stepped, and kept crossing. I was still shaking when we pulled into a gas station/store about 10 miles later.

There was some hair to pull off the front of the bike....but, no real damage, and we continued on the trip.

That's definitely the worst one. I've hit a couple of birds, and a squirrel - kind of a close call, but not like the moose.

Nearly hit a handful of deer over the years. Grazed one pigmy goat. A rabbit jumped at my foot and died from the impact. I had to shake that one off. He got a little stuck there.

Riding in the dark from Northwoods to Cougar, I rounded a corner and found myself in the middle of a dozen or so elk. That's just a guess, as I couldn't see past the first couple rows of them. They slowly parted and I idled down the road's center line.

Not wildlife, but once when I lived in Bellingham, a pit bull came out of someone's yard and latched onto my right boot while I was at a stop sign. Poor dog didn't let go until I was doing 40 or 45.

I have hit 2 Bigfoot (Bigfeet?) and 1 Chupacabra....but no one believes me...

Too many deer to count close encounters with, 2 large wild turkeys, an Alpaca on the lamb near Valley, WA, many small birds, a young Moose, Elk, Bear, had a rattlesnake strike at me as I went by according to those following me. I think the best was a California Condor on the Humboldt Cape/Lost Coast Highway. My wife was behind me on her Buell and said the thing had a 7 foot wingspan and nearly took my helmet off....all I saw was the sun blotted out for an instant.

Been lucky on this score - not even a close call.
My college roommate took a barn owl in the chest while riding back from Wisconsin, alas I have no stories to share.

I was once told, "if you can eat it in one sitting, run over it and continue on".

Not much here either, apart from the usual deer who run into the road in front of you and instead of continuing across, immediately go into "being chased by a wolf" mode, turn and run down the road ahead of you, inerrantly swerving in the same direction that you do. Only damn thing you can do is brake hard and wait for them to bugger off disappointedly that you didn't catch them and eat their entrails while they're still alive, which seems to be what they want. "Hello, I'll be your dinner today. Let me know if there's anything I can do to make it easier for you to kill and eat me."

Crossing that peculiar ridge between Burns and the Narrows in SE Oregon at night, a bunny rocketed out from the side of the road and very precisely and bloodily intersected with my front tire at 60 MPH before I could even think about swerving. There were no other vehicles for tens of miles, and believe me you can see them from up there if there are. That was one determined suicide bunny.

Oh, and of course wasps have this amazing power to find the 1/4" gap between my helmet and collar, smack right the fuck into it at 30+MPH and extremely painfully gift me with an egg sized lump for the next few days. I was actually wearing a neck gaiter the last time it happens but some wasp noticed that it had crept up at the bottom and went for it.

My conclusion: wildlife are sentient, have supernatural calculating ability, and have no other purpose than to give up their lives to fuck with motorcycles.

A ram came out from a side road and smacked into me. Oh, wait. That was a truck, not a mammal. Never mind.

Close calls with deer over the years, couple of near misses with dogs, cats and other smallish critters.

Had a fat racoon dart in front of me as I was taking an off ramp in a construction zone, in the middle of the night somewhere near Sioux Falls, SD after about 13 hours in the saddle. Could've kicked it had I taken my foot off the peg. I'd don't think I even reacted I was so tired.

My cousin was on a jaunt with his wife on the back of his FJR and took a white tailed deer across the front of the bike at about 70 in a curve. I guess the deer was pretty small cuz he said it basically rolled up the front fairing and windscreed and bounced off his arms and chest. He kept it up and was able to stop before running off the road. The deer didn't make it. Bike had some cracked plastics but that's about it.

A few close calls with deer and an antelope.

The one that came the closest to killing me though, was a honey bee. Stung on my wrist. Learned I had a newly developed allergy to them.

Had a deer jump OVER me on a road with a high bank on one side. I saw the bottom of the hooves... Took a bird (small) between my right leg and the bike. I thought someone shot me until I looked down and saw the feathers. No blood though.
Took a Bumble Bee in the right eye at 60 on a dirt bike when I was a kid. Left a 'goo' smear down the right side of my head. It caused me to start thinking about wearing protection though! Lucky it didn't take out my eye.
