Riding Northern CA last week of October!

I just thought I'd throw it out that the weather is AMAZING down in California.
Last week I had a memorial service for a family member who passed away, so I decided to throw the bike in the truck and drive down to Redding and stay an extra day riding in the sunshine!

That day started cool, but with a lazy start to my day, it quickly warmed up in the foothills of Mt Lassen on the east side of Redding. A couple days prior I'd driven around the mountain with my cousin, but I decided I didn't want to take the chance of getting caught up at 8000 feet in weather like it was on that day (cold at that elevation), so I headed in a big loop of lower elevation for the day.

Heading out, i turned my 1290 v-twin east on old 44, then dropped down through some mighty fine back roads, finally ending up down in the valley on Highway 36. From Highway 36 I rode out west of the "5" and then took Highway 3 to 299 and back into town for dinner. There are plenty of good roads in the area but the ones to the west were some of the best pavement of the roads I went on this summer on my OR/CA 1700 mile moto trip! It turned out to hit 87* at the hottest and dropped to a brisk 67* on Highway 3 before getting back to 299 where it warmed back up.
Pavement was clear, tires were sticky, and such a beautiful place to ride. I'd love to spend some more time in CA exploring the backroads. It's certainly a big, big state to explore.

That it great you took advantage of that. Couple years back I threw in my ZX-10 to the granddaughters wedding on 10/01 in Chico. I headed East and did a 400 mile, 14000 feet in overall elevation change ride on Feather River highway, to Reno and Donner Pass, then some back roads all deliciously smooth, twisty and little traffic. Thanks for sharing.

I've done a couple of rides where I staged out of Weaverville and rode several days on hwys 3, 299, 36, 96 and others. All great roads, but 3 and 36 are my favorites. Only fly in the ointment are tar snakes.

Check out my list if you need some inspiration to come back down to California

My personal favorites in the region are CA 36 and CA 96. There's a ton of really good stuff in the area.

I found the pavement on 3 and 299 to be the best of roads back in August, (besides sections of 36). Those ones seemed to have been paved in the last year or two. Many of the roads either had good corners or good pavement, but there were probably about half dozen roads that had exceptionally good pavement and corners.

FWIW, highway 36 is closed in sections for working on a bridge and other road work... It appears to be a long on going project. You WILL have to ride across dirt sections though they are not real long.

Thanks Thumperpilot

I mapped that out for my GPS to take me down there next summer. Looks like a nice ride. I've been thinking of making a base of operation somewhere near there for a few days then taking some nice rides on new to me roads. If you have anymore suggestions I'll put them into the Garmin.

Don't get me wrong... but I'm not sure you're going to like the same roads on a Goldwing? I like the most twisty, "peg scraping" type of roads regardless of scenery and vistas. (Often that's over in the desolate desert of eastern Oregon). There are a LOT of them along the border in both Oregon and CA, but the pavement isn't always good...

The last couple of times that I've been down there to ride Hwy 36 I've found it helpful to call the CA DOT office in Redding beforehand. They were able to provide info on the construction work. There were periods last year when the middle section of 36 was only open for a couple of hours each weekday. The closures were much shorter (less than 30 minutes) when I was down there early this summer.

There are flashing road signs just west outside of Redding on 36 as well. They really don't give very accurate info on the wait times though.

Just back on 11/20 from 2 weeks in North CA. Temps in the 60 - 70 Range, Quincy, Downieville, Susanville, South Tahoe ton of great roads. Caltrans and counties are generous with tarsnakes, but common sense.. I'm told over 10,000 miles of Forest Service maintained roads in the area, dual sports everywhere.
Was 65 when I left Quincy to come home, 40 and head wind by K Falls, dark n 35 by home but always a great ride!
