July 28-30 cut back on the shenanigans

Copy and pasted from Skagit Breaking news....

Skagit County, WA – The State of Washington has seen an increase in the rate of motorcycle-involved fatality and serious-injury collisions this year according to a release from the Washington State Patrol.

In an attempt to address this unfortunate development, Washington State Patrol Troopers in Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, and Island Counties will be conducting a three-day emphasis on motorcycle violations during the last weekend in July.

Trooper Heather Axtman, says starting on Friday, July 28th through Sunday July 3oth, the State Patrol will have extra Troopers on the roadways, as well as their aviation unit in the sky. Troopers will be looking for unsafe, speeding, aggressive and impaired motorcyclists.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, motorcycle fatalities throughout the nation have increased by 8.3% and are the highest it has been since 2012. In the first seven months of 2017, Troopers in Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom and Island Counties have investigated 31 serious-injury or fatal collisions involving motorcycles. Target Zero aims to reduce serious-injury and fatality collisions to zero by 2030.

Trooper Axtman says motorcyclists are required to have a valid motorcycle endorsement when operating a motorcycle. They are also required to wear a Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet with no projections, such as spikes, Mohawks and Go-Pro’s.

Motorcycle license plats must be attached conspicuously at the rear of the motorcycle and mounted horizontally. Lights must be activated and operating when a motorcycle is in motion and Lane-Splitting and driving on the shoulder is illegal in Washington State.

Fucking retards. How many of these are rear-end collisions, where the fucking asshat behind the wheel of a 2500lb death machine is texting their buddies/girlfriends saying; "Oh I love that hat on you...".

Yea they are blaming and targeting the motorcyclists when they should be putting that energy into educating the cagers.

Actually, less than 7% nationwide of the motorcycle fatalities due to multi vehicle are rear end collisions. The vast majority occur in the rider's forward vision area, which indicates way too many riders out there are demonstrating quality collision avoidance skills.

That's not quite accurate. They are targeting the idiots who are ripping down the road, in and out of traffic, and being a danger to themselves and the surrounding vehicles. It takes roughly 1.5-2 seconds for a good operator to see something and begin to react to whatever they have found. If an irresponsible rider is not giving the surrounding traffic that 2 second (or greater) buffer to react, or better respond to what the motorcycle is doing then the rider absolutely owns the result. A motorcycle that is clipping along at 30 MPH faster than the flow of traffic has a closing rate of 45 FPS, or to give it a visual, for every second of closing, the rider is eating up enough extra real estate to safely hold two full sized pickup trucks.

Educate the "cagers?" How about educating ourselves to give them a chance to even see us, and learning how to do proper scanning of our surroundings so that we can have an escape plan at the ready?

I do not wish to abdicate any of my responsibility for my own safety.

So if a GoPro constitutes an illegal helmet "projection" does that also mean that an external Bluetooth adapter (like a Sena) is also illegal? Anyone have a RCW cite for this one? I'd sure like to read that one.

I was concerned about my GoPro and Contour (both illegal) and my Chatterbox X1 Slim.
I believe the Chatterbox would fall into an approved device (by the WSP) but probably not with music on or adjusting the volume or taking a call? This is what I could find:

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218, FMVSS 218, NHTSA, Bikers Rights

S5.5 Projections: A helmet shall not have any rigid projections inside its shell. Rigid projections outside any helmet's shell shall be limited to those required for operation of essential accessories, and shall not protrude more than 0.20 inch (5 mm).

Pfft another spectacularly vague law. The completely-stock-from-Shoei vent / spoiler on the back of my helmet is illegal according to that, as is every dirt helmet with a sun visor. So is every bluetooth comm device with a pod outside the helmet or a boom microphone or in-helmet speakers.

Yep, it's the idiots that bring this upon us. For example, last night I was headed home from Belfair and was stopped at the light where 106 (South Shore) connects to 3. Fortunately I was watching the traffic coming off 106 or things could have been bad. Their light must have turned yellow, because the white Jetta wagon started to slow for it. But the guy on the black R1 behind him didn't want to wait, so he passed the VW on the right and blitzed left through the intersection right across the front of my car, well after my light had gone green. Had I been paying attention only to the light, he would have ended up on the hood of my car.

I'd argue that the vents and spoilers that come from the factory attached to the helmet are part of the shell, including factory attached com devices.
