HWY 20 update

WSDOT - SR 20 - North Cascades Highway

Does this mean a mid week ride? I have always wanted to do the opening and this might be the time.

I'd say ride up there before the opening. You will be limited to only make it to the Ross Lake lookout, but there will be very little traffic (like spooky-none) and you'll have the place to yourself. After the opening, you'll be able to cross over and ride between the snow banks, but at the expense of lots more traffic.

Actually, you can't ride over to Winthrop, but you can ride around the gate and explore to where the road ends (until it actually opens) on a BICYCLE, if that's your thing...
Definitely NOT advisable on a motorcycle.

I don't get it. Is the road open to Winthrop?

Seems like Thursday would be a nice day to go.....

According to WSDOT the answer is yes.

That being said, until later I the season this road will be quite hazardous, with melting snow pouring across, possible ice falls into the corners, and wonderfully cold temps. It's a beautiful ride, but I would not recommend making a banzai run out of it.

WSDOT reports Hwy 20 over Loup Loup Pass is closed with water over the roadway, mud slides, and road repair, and with no indication of when it'll be reopened. We hope to make it through there Saturday. Anyone know, for certain, if Loup Loup Pass is open?

Hwy 20 is in good shape, except the hairpin corner at Washington pass which has water and gravel on it as of today.

Went over Hwy 20 this past weekend, with Electric City as our destination. Hwy 20 over Rainy Pass and Washington Pass is clear, and not really cold. Was surprised that there wasn't really that much snow at the top, given that it opened only a few days earlier. Since Hwy 20 over Loup Loup Pass is still closed by a washout, we took WA 153 south from Twisp down through Methow.

Planning to take this route from Rockport to Twisp for my first time this Saturday. Do you think it'll be clear all the way across with the extra Memorial Day weekend traffic?
