bike insurance

Anyone have suggestions for bike insurance? My finance just got her first bike, a Kawi Z650. and all the quotes that she has gotten seem pretty high.

When I was bike shopping and checked on insurance I found that bikes were put in a category as to type of bike. Two bikes with the same value can have different rates if one is a "sport" bike and the other a "touring" bike or something considered pretty tame. I would bet that the insurance company looks at claims and classifies the type of bike based on number of claims.

My company (Farmers) uses some other company (Foremost) to insure motorcycles. I had a used Honda Rebel 250 some years back and insurance was really low. Now I have a 2012 V-Strom 650 and I pay $263 a year. This Friday I asked about insuring a BMW R1200RT and price was between $400 and $500 a year, I don't recall the exact number but did not seem too bad considering the increase in value. These are pretty tame bikes and I'm a somewhat older fellow with a clean traffic record.

Nobody beats State Farm, if you can just get liability and comprehensive. Remember the higher the deductible rate the lower the cost.

Are you able to get USAA? They have a contract with Progressive for their members. Cut my bill in half

That's what I have. My insurance company in PA wouldn't cover me out here. I don't believe USAA / Progressive was half, but it definitely saves me some money.

It was half for me, but that was because I was using Liberty Mutual. I had the whole bundle thing with them for the house, cars and motos

My bike is $22/month through geico. It is an older street bike, and I'm older with a clean driving/riding record.

I just had to shop mine around when my previous insurer -- Progressive -- classified my FJR1300 as a sport bike rather than a touring bike, and as such my premium was sky-high. Checked with Geico (also very high!) and a couple others. Finally ended up with Safeco...definitely the best of the bunch I checked with.

Whatever you do, do not use Geico. They are well know for not paying claims and/or dragging it out until it's not worth it to you.

Not my experience at all. Have had them for years and the one time I had an issue, they assessed and paid out in a few days. Shop I went to said they were always really fast.

Another one for State Farm. Had them for years. Currently 36 dollars a month for my 848, even after I claimed a totaled previous sport bike. They gave me a very good settlement. My rates did not change, but that was the only thing on my record.

I had Geico for 2 years before my first claim, my gear was stolen from my bike, they basically told me I had no proof anything was stolen because the luggage was taken as well. Even with the police report. The second time about 6 months later my bike was biked into in a parking lot, they basically told me my bike probably fell over due to my carelessness, I threatened to sue them because I had clear evidence it was backed into, they paid and I dropped them for State Farm.
I've also watched several friends deal with them, and it's just not worth it. I'm glad your experience was positive but their overall reviews show you experience to be pretty rare.
